| He reached the end of the path, his chest heaving, the veins in his neck
seemingly prepared to burst as the sweat ran down his skin, drenching his face, his collar and his
shirtGasping, he steadied the AK-47, his back pressed against the wall of the building, then spun
around the corner into the parking area, stunned by what he sawHis pounding feet, coupled with
the anxiety that caused his hair-soaked temples to throb, had blocked out all sound up aheadWhat
he observed now, what sickened him now, he knew had to be the result of multiple gunshots muted
by a weapon equipped with a silencerDispassionately, Medusa?s Delta understood; he had been
there many times many years beforeThere were circumstances under which kills had to be made
quietly?utter silence was the unreachable goal, but at least minimal noise was crucial
The young KGB driver from the assault squad was sprawled on the ground by the trunk of the
dark green sedan, the wounds in his head certifying deathThe car had swerved into the side of a
government bus, the sort used to haul workers to and from their places of employmentHow or
why the accident had happened, Bourne could not knowNeither could he know whether Alex or
Krupkin had survived; the car?s windows had been pierced repeatedly and there was no sign of
movement inside, both facts suggesting the worst but nothing conclusiveAbove all, at this
moment, the Chameleon also understood that he could not be affected by what he saw?emotions
were out! If the worst had happened, mourning chanel j12 the dead would come later, vengeance and taking
the killer came now
Think! How? Quickly!
Krupkin had said there were ?several dozen men and women? working at the armoryIf so,
where the hell were they? The Jackal wasnot acting in a vacuum; it was impossible! Yet a
collision had occurred, its violent crash heard over a hundred yards away?well over the distance

of a football field?and a man had been shot dead at the site of that crash, his lifeless body bleeding
in the dirt, yet no one?no one?had appeared, either accidentally or intentionallyWith the
exception of Carlos and five unknown people, was the entire armory operating in a vacuum?
Nothing made sense!
And then he heard the muffled but emphatic strains of music from deep inside the building
Martial music, drums and trumpets predominating, swelling to crescendos that Bourne could only
imagine were deafening within the echoing confines of the huge structureThe image of the young
woman emerging from the front entrance returned; she had playfully clapped her hands over her
ears and grimaced, and Jason had not understoodShe had come from the armory?s
inner staging area, where the decibel level of the music was overpoweringAn event was taking
place at the Kubinka, a decently attended affair, which accounted for the profusion of automobiles,
small vans and buses in the vast parking area?profusion at any rate in the Soviet Union, where
such vehicles were not in oversupplyAltogether there were perhaps big chanel twenty conveyances in the dirt
lot, parked in a semicircleThe activity inside was both the Jackal?s diversion and his protection; he
knew how to orchestrate both to his advantage
Why didn?t Carlos come out? Why hadn?t he come out? What was he waiting for? The
circumstances were optimal; they couldn?t be betterHad his wounds slowed him to the point that
he had lost the advantages he had created? It was possible, but not likelyThe assassin had gotten
this far, and if escape was in the offing, it was in him to go further, much furtherThen why?
Irreversible logic, a killer?s survival logic demanded that after taking out the backup the Jackal had
to race away as fast as humanly possibleIt was his only chance! Then why was he still inside?
Why hadn?t his escape car fled from the area, speeding him to freedom?
His back once again pressed against the wall, Jason sidestepped to his left, closely observing
everything he could seeLike most armories the world over, Kubinka had no windows on the first
floor, at least not for the first fifteen feet from the ground; he presumed it was because the
occasional wildly galloping horses and glass did not go togetherHe could see a window frame on
what appeared to be the second floor but close enough to the slain driver to afford maximum
accuracy for a silenced high-powered weapon: Another frame on ground level had a knob
protruding; it was the rear exit no one had bothered to mentionThe little things, the insignificant
things! Goddamn!
The muted music inside chanel jewellery swelled again, but now the swelling was different, the drums louder, the
trumpets more sustained, more piercingIt was the unmistakable ending of a symphonic march,
martial music at its most intenseThat was it! The end of the event inside was at hand and the
Jackal would use the emerging crowds to cover his escapeHe would mingle, and when panic
spread through the parking area with the sight of the dead man and the shot-up sedan, he would
disappear?with whom and with what vehicle would take hours to determine
Bourne had to get inside; he had to stop him, take him! Krupkin had worried about the lives of
?several dozen men and women??he had no idea that in reality there were several hundred! Carlos
would use whatever firepower he had stolen, including grenades, to create mass hysteria so that he
could escapeLives meant nothing; if further killing was required to save his own, nothing
Abandoning caution, Delta raced to the door, gripping his AK-47 laterally in his arm, the safety
unlatched, his index finger on the triggerHe grabbed the knob and twisted it?it would not turn
He fired his weapon into the plated metal around the lock, then a second fusillade into the opposing
frame, and as he reached for the smoking knob, his personal world went mad!
Out of the line of vehicles a heavy truck suddenly shot forward, coming straight toward him,
wildly accelerating as it approachedSimultaneously, successive bursts of automatic gunfire

erupted, the bullets thumping into louis vuitton scarf the wood to his rightHe lunged to his left, rolling on the ground,
the dust and dirt filling his eyes as he kept rolling, his body a tube spinning away
And then it happened! The massive explosion tore apart the door, blowing away a large section
of the wall above, and through the black smoke and settling debris, he could see a figure lurching
awkwardly toward the semicircle of vehiclesHis killer was getting away after all, But he was
alive! And the reason for it was obvious?the Jackal had made a mistakeNot in the trap, that was
extraordinary; Carlos knew his enemy was with Krupkin and the KGB and so he had gone outside
and waited for himInstead, his error was in the placement of the explosivesHe had wired the
bomb or bombs to the top of the truck?s engine, not underneathExplosive compounds seek release
through the least resistant barriers; the relatively thin hood of a vehicle is far less solid than the iron
beneath itThe bomb actually blew up, it did not blow out on ground level, sending death-inducing
metal fragments along the surface
No time! Bourne struggled to his feet and staggered to the Komitet sedan, a horrible fear coming
into focusHe looked through the shattered windows, his eyes suddenly drawn to the front seat as a
heavily fleshed hand was raisedHe yanked the door open and saw Krupkin, his large body
squeezed below the seat under the dashboard, his right shoulder half torn away, bleeding flesh
apparent through the fabric of his jacket

| Stranger still, and even more unlikely, was the fact that these same three people
were staying at the same hotel at the same time in Washington eight months laterJason wondered
what Alex Conklin would say when he told him
?I?m getting the book on each of them,? said Alex, sinking into an armchair across from the
couch and the printouts
?You knew??
?It wasn?t hard to put togetherOf course, it was a hell of a lot easier with a computer doing the
scanning
?You might have included a note! I?ve been poring over these things since eight o?clock
?I didn?t find it?them?until after nine and I didn?t want to call you from Virginia
?That?s another story, isn?t it?? said Bourne, sitting down on the couch, once again leaning
forward anxiously
?Yes, it is, and it?s chanel pearl necklace God-awful
?Medusa??
?It?s worse than I thought, and worse than that, I didn?t think it could be
?It?s a bowelful,? countered the retired intelligence officerPentagon
procurements? The Federal Trade Commission? Our ambassador in London, or would you like the
supreme commander of NATO??
?My God !?
Robert Ludlum ?? THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM

?Oh, I can go one betterFor size, try on the chairman of the Joint Chiefs
?Christ, what is it? Some kind of cabal??
?That?s so academic, DrNow try collusion, down deep and elusive and after all these
years still breathing, still aliveThey?re in contact with each other in high placesWhy??
?What?s the purpose? The objective??
?I just said that, asked that, really
?There has to be a reason!?
?Try motiveI just said that, too, and it may be as simple as gucci horsebit hobo hiding past sinsIsn?t that what we
were looking for? A collection of former Medusans who?d run to the hills at the thought of the past
coming to light??
?Then that?s it
?No, it?s not, and this is Saint Alex?s instincts searching for wordsTheir reactions were too
immediate, too visceral, too loaded with today, not twenty years agoSomething?s different from what we expected, and I?m goddamned sick of
making mistakesBut this isn?t a mistakeYou said this morning that it could be a net work, and
I thought you were way the hell off baseI thought that maybe we?d find a few high profiles who
didn?t want to be publicly drawn and quartered for things they did twenty years ago, or who
legitimately didn?t want to embarrass the government, and we could use them, force them in chanel j 12 their
collective fear to do things and say things we told them to doBut this is differentIt?s today, and I
can?t figure it outIt?s more than fear, it?s panic; they?re frightened out of their mindsWe?ve
bumbled and stumbled onto something, MrBourne, and in your rich friend Cactus?s old-time
minstrel-show language, ?In the focus, it could be bigger than bo?fus
?In my considered opinion there?s, nothing bigger than the Jackal! Not for meThe rest can go
to hell
?I?m on your side and I?ll go to the wall shouting itI just wanted you to know my thoughts
Except for a brief and pretty rotten interlude, we never kept anything from each other, David
?I prefer Jason these days
?Yes, I know,? interrupted Conklin?I hate it but I understand
?Do you??
?Yes,? said Alex softly, nodding as he 925 tiffany's necklace closed his eyes?I?d do anything to change it but I can?tIn that serpentine mind of yours?Cactus?s description, incidentally?
conjure up the worst scenario you can think of and shove those bastards against another wall, one
they can?t get away from unscathed unless they follow your instructions down to the letterThose
orders will be to stay quiet and wait for you to call and tell them who to reach and what to say
Conklin looked over at his damaged friend with guilt and concern? There may be a scenario in
place that I can?t match,? said Alex quietly?I won?t make another mistake, not in that areaI need
more than what I?ve got
Bourne clasped his hands, flesh angrily grinding flesh in frustrationHe stared at the scattered
printouts in front of him, frowning, wincing, his jaw vintage cartier watch pulsa |

Our lids turned black, but not with deathNight had fallen, and this made us sadWithout the
heat of day, we would probably last longer
It was dark and silent for a timeless spaceThen there was a soundWe weren't sure if we imagined itMaybe it was a coyote, after allDid we
want that? We didn't knowWe lost our train of thought and forgot the sound
Something shook us, pulled our numb arms, dragged at themWe couldn't form the words to
wish that it would be quick now, but that was our hopeWe waited for the cut of teethInstead,
the dragging turned to pushing, and we felt our face roll toward the sky
It poured over our face?wet, cool, and impossibleIt coco chanel handbags dribbled over our eyes, washing the grit
from themOur eyes fluttered, blinking against the dripping
We did not care about the grit in our eyesOur chin arched up, desperately searching, our
mouth opening and closing with blind, pathetic weakness, like a newly hatched bird
We thought we heard a sigh
And then the water flowed into our mouth, and we gulped at it and choked on itThe water
vanished while we choked, and our weak hands grasped out for itA flat, heavy thumping
pounded our back until we could breatheOur hands kept clutching the air, looking for the
water
We definitely heard a sigh this time
Something pressed to our cracked lips, and the white chanel purse water flowed againWe guzzled, careful not to
inhale it this timeNot that we cared if we choked, but we did not want the water taken away
again
We drank until our belly stretched and achedThe water trickled to a stop, and we cried out
hoarsely in protestAnother rim was pressed to our lips, and we gulped frantically until it was
empty, too
Our stomach would explode with another mouthful, yet we blinked and tried to focus, to see if
we could find moreIt was too dark; we could not see a single starAnd then we blinked again
and realized that the darkness was much closer than the skyA figure hovered over us, blacker
than the night
There was a low sound black spy bag of fabric rubbing against itself and sand shifting under a heelThe figure
leaned away, and we heard a sharp rip?the sound of a zipper, deafening in the absolute stillness
of the night
Like a blade, light cut into our eyesWe moaned at the pain of it, and our hand flew up to cover
our closed eyesEven behind our lids, the light was too brightThe light disappeared, and we
felt the breath of the next sigh hit our face
We opened our eyes carefully, more blind than beforeWhoever faced us sat very still and said
nothingWe began to feel the tension of the moment, but it felt far away, outside ourselfIt was
hard to care about anything but the water in our balenciaga twiggy belly and where we could find moreWe tried
to concentrate, to see what had rescued us
The first thing we could make out, after minutes of blinking and squinting, was the thick
whiteness that fell from the dark face, a million splinters of pale in the nightWhen we grasped
that this was a beard?like Santa Claus, we thought chaotically?the other pieces of the face were
supplied by our memoryEverything fit into place: the big cleft-tipped nose, the wide
cheekbones, the thick white brows, the eyes set deep into the wrinkled fabric of skinThough
we could see only hints of each feature, we knew how light would expose them

| Now, get back in there The two inebriated men lurched down the alley, Field
Jacket slapping Tank Shirt triumphantly across the shouldersJason pressed his back against the
street-side brick inches from the edge of the building and waitedSix minutes passed, and then he
heard the words he so desperately wanted to hear
?Santos! My great and good friend Santos!?
?What are you doing here, Ren???
?My young American friend was sick to his stomach but it has gone?he vomited??
?Let me introduce you, SantosHe?s about to become a great soldier
?There is a Children?s Crusade somewhere?? Bourne peered around the corner as the bald

?You talk French awful fast, mistuh, but I caught some of thatYou?re a big mother, but I can be

?Santos!? cried Maurice-Ren?I left my billfold back at my flat
?If you ever had a billfold, you left it back in North AfricaNot a sou for

?What money I had went for your lousy fish! It made my friend vomit!?
?For your next meal, go down to Paris and dine at the RitzAh, yes! You did have a meal?

looked up the alleyYou too, baby warrior
Bourne ran down the pavement toward the gates of the old factorySantos was coming to meet

took the Jackal was closer! Moments later, the immense figure emerged from the alley, crossed the
dimly lit street and approached the rusted gates
?I am here, monsieur,? said Santos

?We?re alone,? said the voice across the dark room as Bourne opened his eyesSantos?s huge frame

concussions are concernedAt your side, on a tray, is an ice bagIt might be well to use it
Bourne reached down in the dim light, grabbed the bulky cold bag and brought it to his head
?You?re very considerate,? he said flatly
?Why not? We have several things to discuss perhaps a million, if broken down into francs

I walked out into the bright noon light, and the giant space was empty
The fresh tendrils of the cantaloupe vines were dark green, darker than the dry earth they
sprang fromThe earth was too dry?the irrigating barrel stood ready to fix that, the hoses laid
out along the furrowsBut no one manned the crude machineIt sat abandoned on the side of
the field
I stood very still, trying to hear somethingThe huge cavern was silent, and the silence was
ominousWhere was everyone?
Had they evacuated without me? A pang of fear and hurt shot through meBut they wouldn't
have left without Doc, of courseThey would never leave DocI wanted to dart back gucci indy bag through
the long tunnel to make sure Doc had not disappeared, too
They wouldn't go without us, either, sillyJared and Jamie and Ian wouldn't leave us behindLet's? check the kitchen?
I jogged down the silent corridor, getting more anxious as the silence continuedMaybe it was
my imagination, and the loud thumping of my pulse in my earsOf course there must be
something to hearIf I could calm down and slow my breathing, I'd be able to hear voices
But I reached the kitchen and it was empty, tooOn the tables, half-eaten
lunches had been abandonedPeanut butter on the last of the soft breadApples and warm cans
of soda
My stomach reminded me that I omega constellation hadn't eaten at all today, but I barely noted the twist of hunger
The panic was so much stronger
What if? what if we didn't evacuate soon enough?
No!Mel gaspedo, we would have heard something! Someone would have? or there would
be? They'd still be here, looking for usThey wouldn't give up until they'd checked everywhere
So that can't be it
Unless they're looking for us now
I spun back toward the door, my eyes darting through the shadows
I had to go warn DocWe had to get out of here if we were the last two
No! They can't be gone!Jamie, Jared? Their faces were so clear, as if they were etched onto
the insides of my eyelids
And Ian's face, as I cartier love added my own pictures to hersJeb, Trudy, Lily, Heath, Geoffreye'll get
them back, I vowede'll hunt them down one by one and steal them back! I won't letthem take
my family!
If I'd had any doubts where I stood, this moment would have erased themI'd never felt so
fierce in all my livesMy teeth clenched tight, snapping together audibly
And then the noise, the babble of voices I'd been so anxiously straining to hear, echoed down
the hall to us and made my breath catchI slid silently to the wall and pressed myself into the
shadow there, listeningYou can hear it in the echoes
Sounds like a large groupBut yours or mine?
Ours or theirs, she hermes tas corrected
I crept down the hall, keeping to the darkest shadowsWe could hear the voices more clearly
now, and some of them were familiarDid that mean anything? How long would it take trained
Seekers to perform an insertion?
And then, as I reached the very mouth of the great cave, the sounds became even clearer, and
relief washed through me?because the babble of voices was just the same as it had been my very
first day here
They had to be human voices
Relief warred with pain as I hurried into the bright sunlight to see what was going onRelief
because my humans were safeAnd pain because if Kyle was already safely back, then?

We were in the gigantic, bright cavern again, the one they'd first brought me toHow long ago
was that? I had no ideaThe ceiling was still too bright for me to make out exactly how it was
litI hadn't noticed before, but the walls were not unbroken?dozens of irregular gaps opened to
adjoining tunnelsSome of the openings were huge, others barely large enough for a man to fit
through stooped over; some were natural crevices, others were, if not man-made, at least
enhanced by someone's hands
Several people stared at us from the recesses of those crevices, frozen in the act of coming or
goingMore people were out in the open, their bodies caught in the middle of whatever
movement our entrance had interruptedOne woman was bent in half, men's gucci wallet reaching for her
shoelacesA man's motionless arms hung in the air, raised to illustrate some point he'd been
making to his companionsAnother man wobbled, caught off balance in a sudden stopHis foot
came down hard as he struggled to keep steady; the thud of its fall was the only sound in the
vast spaceIt echoed through the room
It was fundamentally wrong for me to feel grateful to that hideous weapon in Jeb's hands? but
I didI knew that without it we would probably have been attackedThese humans would not
stop themselves from hurting Jeb if it meant they could get to meThough we might be attacked
despite the gunJeb could only shoot one of them at a time
The picture in my head had turned so grisly that I couldn't bear itI tried to balenciaga giant bag focus on my
immediate surroundings, which were bad enough
Jeb paused for a moment, the gun held at his waist, pointing outwardHe stared all around the
room, seeming to lock his gaze one by one with each person in itThere were fewer than twenty
here; it did not take longWhen he was satisfied with his study, he headed for the left wall of
the cavernBlood thudding in my ears, I followed in his shadow
He did not walk directly across the cavern, instead keeping close to the curve of the wallI
wondered at his path until I noticed a large square of darker ground that took up the center of
the floor?a very large spaceNo one stood on this darker groundI was too frightened to do
more than notice the anomaly; I didn't even guess at a louis vuitton backpacks reason
There were small movements as we circled the silent roomThe bending woman straightened,
twisting at the waist to watch us goThe gesturing man folded his arms across his chestAll
eyes narrowed, and all faces tightened into expressions of rageHowever, no one moved toward
us, and no one spokeWhatever Kyle and the others had told these people about their
confrontation with Jeb, it seemed to have had the effect Jeb was hoping for
As we passed through the grove of human statues, I recognized Sharon and Maggie eyeing us
from the wide mouth of one openingTheir expressions were blank, their eyes coldThey did
not look at me, only Jeb
It felt like years later when we finally reached the far side of the cavernJeb headed for a
medium-sized exit, chanel earings black against the brightness of this roomThe eyes on my back made my
scalp tingle, but I didn't dare to look behind meThe humans were still silent, but I worried that
they might followIt was a relief to slip into the darkness of the new passagewayJeb's hand
touched my elbow to guide me, and I did not shrink away from itThe babble of voices didn't
pick up again behind us
?That went better than I expected,? Jeb muttered as he steered me through the caveHis words
surprised me, and I was glad I didn't know what he'd thought would happen
The ground sloped downward under my feetAhead, a dim light kept me from total blindness
?Bet you've never seen anything like my place here Jeb's voice was louder now, back to the
chatty tone he'd used chanel black tote bag befor |

| ?I?m flying to Paris, Johnny,?
she said, breathing deeply and wiping the tears from her face
?You?re what??
?You heard meJamie loves her and she?s better with Alison than
I could ever be?and why not? She?s had seven children, all grown up who still come back to her
every Sunday
?You?re crazy! I won?t let you!?
?Somehow,? said Marie, giving her brother a withering look, ?I have an idea you probably said
something like that to David when he told you he was going to Paris
?Yes, I did!?
?And you couldn?t stop him any more than you can stop me
?But why??
?Because I know every place he knows in Paris, every street, every caf?, every alley, from
Sacr?-Coeur to MontmartreHe has to use them, and I?ll find him long before the Deuxi?me or the
S?ret? The telephone rang; Marie picked it chanel shopping bag up
?I told you I?d call you right back,? said the voice of Alex Conklin?Bernardine has an idea that
might work
?Who?s Bernardine??
?An old Deuxi?me colleague and a good friend who?s helping David
?What?s his idea??
?He got Jason?David?a rental carHe knows the license-plate number and is having it radioed
to all the Paris police patrols to report it if seen, but not to stop the car or harass the driverSimply
keep it in sight and report directly to him
?And you think David?Jason?won?t spot something like that? You?ve got a terrible memory,
worse than my husband?s
?It?s only one possibility, there are otherswell, he?s bound to call meWhen he hears the news about Teagarten, he?s got to call
me
?Why??
?Like you say, to get him out!?
?With Carlos in the offing? Fat chance, borse replica fatheadI?ve got a better idea
?You can?t!?
?I don?t want to hear that anymore, I won?t hear that anymoreAre you going to help me or do I
do it by myself??
?I couldn?t get a postage stamp from a dispensing machine in France, and Holland couldn?t get
the address of the Eiffel Tower
?Then I?m on my own, which, frankly, under the circumstances, makes me feel a lot safer
?What can you do, Marie??
?I won?t give you a litany, but I can go to all those places he and I went to, used when we were
runningHe?ll use them again, somehow, some wayHe has to because in your crazy jargon they
were ?secure,? and in his crazy frame of mind he?ll return to them because he knows they?re
secure

| My side felt
fine, which made me think that my rib had never really been broken
I'd seen my face while I was cleaning mirrors two weeks agoThe scar forming on my cheek
was dark red and as big as the palm of my hand, with a dozen jagged points around the edgesIt
bothered Melanie more than it did me
?I'll take the goal,? Ian told me, while Lily fell back and Wes paced beside the ballCompetition appealed to her
From the moment the game started?Wes kicking the ball back to Lily and then sprinting ahead
to get around me for her pass?there was very little time to thinkOnly balenciaga blue to react and to feelSee
Lily shift her body, measure the direction this would send the ballCut Wes off?ah, but he was
surprised by how fast I was?launch the ball to Ian and move up the fieldLily was playing too
far forwardI raced her to the lantern goalpost and wonIan aimed the pass perfectly, and I
scored the first goal
It felt good: the stretch and pull of muscle, the sweat of exertion rather than plain heat, the
teamwork with IanI was quick, and his aim was deadlyWes's goading
dried up before Ian scored the third goal
Lily called the game when we hit tiffany heart tag necklace twenty-oneShe was breathing hardNot me; I felt good,
muscles warm and limber
Wes wanted another round, but Lily was done
?Face it, they're better
?No one ever said she couldn't play
?No one ever said she was a pro, either
I liked that?it made me smile
?Don't be a sore loser,? Lily said, reaching out to tickle Wes's stomach playfullyHe caught her
fingers and pulled her closer to himShe laughed, tugging away, but Wes reeled her in and
planted a solid kiss on her laughing mouth
Ian and I exchanged a quick, startled glance
?For you, I will lose with grace,? Wes told her, and then rolex vintage women's watch set her free
Lily's smooth caramel skin had taken on a bit of pink on her cheeks and neckShe peeked at Ian
and me to see our reaction
?And now,? Wes continued, ?I'm off to get reinforcementsWe'll see how your little ringer does
against Kyle, Ian He lobbed the ball into the far dark corner of the cave, where I heard it
splash into the spring
Ian trotted off to retrieve it, while I continued to look at Lily curiously
She laughed at my expression, sounding self-conscious, which was unusual for her
?How long has? that been going on?? I wonderedIt's not a secret?how could women's santos 100 replica anything be a secret here, anyway? It's just really? new
to meIt's sort of your fault,? she added, smiling to show that she was teasing me
I felt a little guilty anyway?What did I do??
?Nothing,? she assured me?It was Wes's? reaction to you that surprised meI didn't know he
had so much depth to himI was never really aware of him before thatHe's too young
for me, but what does that matter here?? She laughed again? It's strange how life and love go
onI didn't expect thatKind of funny how that happens,? Ian agreedI hadn't heard him returnHe slung his

NovgorodTo say it was incredible was to obliquely recognize the existence of credibility and that
was nearly impossibleIt was the ultimate fantasy, its optical illusions seemingly more real than
reality, the phantasmagoria there to be touched, felt, used, entered into and departed from; it was a
collective masterpiece of invention cut out of the immense forests along the Volkhov RiverFrom
the moment Bourne emerged from the deep underground tunnel below the water with its guards,
gates and myriad cameras, he was as close to being in a state of shock while still being able to keep
walking, observing, absorbing, thinking
The American compound, presumably like tiffany co jewelry those of the different countries, was broken up into
sections, built on areas anywhere from two to five acres, each distinctly separate from the others
One area, erected on the banks of the river, might be the heart of a Maine waterfront village;
another, farther inland, a small Southern town; yet another, a busy metropolitan city streetEach
was completely ?authentic? with the appropriate vehicular traffic, police, dress codes, shops,
grocery and drug stores, gas stations and mock structures of buildings?many of which rose two
stories high and were so real they had American hardware on the doors and windowsObviously, as
vital as the physical appearances was language?not merely the fluent use of English but the
mastery of linguistic idiosyncrasies, the dialects that were characteristic of specific locationsAs
Jason wandered from one section to another he heard all around him the distinctive soundsFrom
New England Down East with its ?eeahh? to Texas?s drawl and its familiar ?you-alls?; from the
gentle nasality of the Midwest to the loud abrasiveness of the large Eastern cities with the
inevitable ?know what I mean?? tacked on to tiffany and co jewelry conversational sentences, whether questions or
statementsIt was all incredibleIt was not simply beyond belief, it made the true suspension of
disbelief frighteningly viable
He had been briefed on the flight from Vnokova by a late-middle-aged Novgorod graduate who
had been urgently summoned from his Moscow apartment by KrupkinThe small, bald man was
not only garrulously instructive, but in his own way mesmerizingIf anyone had ever told Jason
Bourne that he was going to be briefed in depth by a Soviet espionage agent whose English was so
laced with the Deep South that it sonorously floated out of his mouth with the essence of
magnolias, he would have deemed the information preposterous

?May we concentrate on Novgorod, please??

?Ah?ll explain The strange man whose voice belonged to the old Confederacy had been
thorough
Each compound at Novgorod was divided into three classes of personnel: the trainers, the
candidates and operationsThe last category included the KGB staff, guards and maintenanceThe
practical implementation of the Novgorod process was simple in structureA compound?s staff
created the daily training schedules for each individual section, and the trainers, both permanent
and part-time retirees, commandeered all individual and group activities while the candidates
carried them out, using only the language of the compound and the dialects of the specific areas in
which they were locatedNo Russian was permitted; the rule was tested frequently by the trainers
who would suddenly bark orders or insults in the native chloe bags paddington language, which the candidates could not
acknowledge understanding
?When you say assignments,? Bourne had asked, ?what do you mean??
?Situations, mah friendJest about anything you might think ofLike ordering lunch or dinner,
or buying clothes, or fillin? the tank of your car, requesting a specific gasoline leaded or unleaded
and the degrees of octane?all of which we don?t know a thing about hereThen, of course, there
are the more dramatic events often unscheduled so as to test the candidates? reactionsSay, an
automobile accident necessitating conversations with ?American? police and the resulting insurance
forms that must be filled out?you can give yourself away if you appear too ignorant
The little things, the insignificant things-they were vitalA back door at the Kubinka Armory
?What else??
?So many inconsequential things that a person might not consider significant, but they can be
Say, being mugged in a city street at night?what should you do, what shouldn?t you do?

| It?s why you?re not really one of the brightest, just someone
who can use language to make yourself appear bright, and I think we?ve seen and heard enough of
that these daysGates, or I go to the raucous bar of my choiceI?m now a confidential legal consultantHow do you
want to pay it? I can?t imagine you have it with you, so how will you honor the debt?for the
information??
?My word??
?Forget it, RandyI?ll have it sent to the Boston Five in the morning
?That?s very endearing of youBut in case it occurs to your superiors to stop me from collecting,
please advise them that an unknown person, an old friend of mine in the streets, has a letter

detailing everything that?s gone on between usIt is to be mailed to the Massachusetts Attorney
General, Return Receipt Requested, in the event I have an accidentThe information, please
?Yes, well, you should know that you?ve involved yourself in what appears to be an extremely
sensitive government operation, that?s the bottom chanel cc logo earrings lineOn the assumption that anyone in an
emergency leaving one place for another would do so with the fastest transportation possible, our
rumbottom detective went to Logan Airport, under what guise I don?t knowNevertheless, he
succeeded in obtaining the manifests of every plane leaving Boston yesterday morning from the
first flight at six-thirty to ten o?clockAs you recall, that corresponds with the parameters of your
statement to me??leaving first thing in the morning ?
?And??
?Patience, RandolphYou told me not to write anything down, so I must take this step by step
Where was I??
?The manifestsWell, according to Detective Sleaze, there were eleven unaccompanied children
booked on various flights, and eight women, two of them nuns, who had reservations with minors
Of these eight, including the nuns who were taking nine orphans to California, the remaining six
were identified as follows The old man reached into his pocket and shakily took out a typewritten
sheet of paper?Obviously, I did not write thisI chanel handbags on sale don?t own a typewriter because I can?t type; it
comes from F?hrer Sleaze
?Let me have it!? ordered Gates, rushing forward, his hand outstretched
?Surely,? said the seventy-year-old disbarred attorney, giving the page to his former student? It
won?t do you much good, however,? he added? Our Sleaze checked them out, more to inflate his
hours than for anything elseNot only are they all squeaky clean, but he performed that
unnecessary service after the real information was uncovered
?What?? asked Gates, his attention diverted from the page? What information??
?Information that neither Sleaze nor I would write down anywhereThe first hint of it came
from the morning setup clerk for Pan American AirlinesHe mentioned to our lowbrow detective
that among his problems yesterday was a hotshot politician, or someone equally offensive, who
needed diapers several minutes after our clerk went on duty at five-forty-fiveDid you know that
diapers come in sizes and are locked away in an airline?s contingency supplies??
?What chanel reporter bag are you trying to tell me??
?All the stores in the airport were closedThey open at seven o?clock
?So??
?So someone in a hurry forgot somethingA lone woman with a five-year-old child and an
infant were leaving Boston on a private jet taking off on the runway nearest the Pan Am shuttle
countersThe clerk responded to the request and was personally thanked by the motherYou see,
he?s a young father and understood about diaper sizesHe brought three different packages??
?For God?s sake, will you get to the point, Judge??
?Judge?? The gray-faced old man?s eyes widenedExcept for my friends in
various gin mills, I haven?t been called that in yearsIt must be the aura I exude
?It was a throwback to that same boring circumlocution you used both on the bench and in the
classroom!?
?Impatience was always your weak suitI ascribed it to your annoyance with other people?s
points of view that interfered with your conclusionsRegardless, our Major Sleaze knew a rotten
apple when the worm emerged and spat in his face, so he fendi replica spy bag hied himself off to Logan?s control tower,

where he found a bribable off duty traffic controller who checked yesterday morning?s schedules
The jet in question had a computer readout of Four Zero, which to our Captain Sleaze?s
astonishment he was told meant it was government-cleared and maximum-classifiedNo manifest,
no names of anyone on board, only a routing to evade commercial aircraft and a destination
?Which was??
?Blackburne, Montserrat
?What the hell is that??
?The Blackburne Airport on the Caribbean island of Montserrat
?That?s where they went? That?s it??
?Not necessarilyAccording to Corporal Sleaze, who I must say does his follow-ups, there are
small flight connections to a dozen or so minor offshore islands
?That?s it??
?That?s it, ProfessorAnd considering the fact that the aircraft in question had a Four Zero
government classification, which, incidentally, in my letter to the attorney general I so specified, I
think I?ve earned my ten thousand ceramic chanel dollars |
