CHAPTER 13
Deciphering the Message
Doon headed for home, and Lina went in the opposite
direction across Harken SquareThe little group of
Believers had gone, but the protesters with their signs
continued to pace back and forthA few of them
were still shaking their fists in the air and yelling, but
most of them tramped silently, looking tired and
discouragedLina felt a bit that way, tooOnce Doon
said he'd seen a door, she was sure that the door he'd
found and the door in the Instructions were the same
She had had such hopes for that door in the
PipeworksBut hoping so rolex chain hard had made her jump to
conclusionsShe'd gone a little too fastShe always
went fastSometimes it was a good thing and sometimes
not
Now Doon thought the Instructions were nothing
important after allShe didn't want him to be right
She didn't believe he was, even nowBut her thoughts
166
felt like a mess of tangled yarnShe needed someone
wise and sensible to help her sort things outShe
headed for Glome Street
Though it was nearly six o'clock, she found Clary still
in her workroom, at the far end of Greenhouse 1It
was a small, crowded roomPots and trowels cluttered
a high table vuitton pink bag at one endAbove the table were shelves
full of bottles of seeds, and boxes of string, wire, and
various kinds of powdersClary's desk was a rickety
table, littered with scraps of paper, all of them covered
with notes in her neat, round handwritingTwo
rickety chairs went with the rickety table, one on each
sideLina sat down facing Clary"I have to tell you
some important things," she said"And they're all
secret
"All right," said Clary She was
wearing a patched shirt that had faded from blue to
grayHer short brown hair was tucked behind her ears,
and a bit of leaf clung to it on the omega deville watch right-hand sideShe
folded her arms in front of her on the deskShe looked
square and solid
"The first thing is," Lina began, "that I found the
InstructionsBut Poppy had chewed them up
"The Instructions," said Clary"I'm not familiar
with themShe went on to explain everything--how
she'd shown the Instructions to Doon,
167
what they had figured out, how he'd searched the
Pipeworks and found the door, and what he'd seen
when he opened the door
Clary made an unhappy sound and shook her
head"This is very bad," she saidI
remember when the mayor was first starting outHe
has always gucci backpacks been foolish, but not always wickedI'm
sorry to know that the worst side of him has won out
Clary's dark brown eyes seemed to grow deeper and
sadder"There is so much darkness in Ember, LinaIt's
not just outside, it's inside us, tooEveryone has some
darkness insideIt's like a hungry creatureIt wants
and wants and wants with a terrible powerAnd the
more you give it, the bigger and hungrier it getsShe had felt it in Looper's shop as she
hovered over the colored pencilsFor a moment, she
felt sorry for the mayorHis hunger had grown so
big it could never be satisfiedHis huge body couldn't

"Curiosity leads to trouble," said Redge Stabmark
He peered down at the crowd"You have caused a
commotion He pulled her toward the door and
hustled her down all three flights of stairsWhen they
came out into the waiting room, Barton Snode was
standing there looking flustered, his jaw twitching
from side to sideNext to him was the mayor
"A child causing trouble, Mayor Cole," said the
chief guard
The mayor glared at herShame! Disgracing yourself in your
new job
"I didn't mean to cause trouble," said Lina"I was
37
looking for you so I could deliver a message
"Shall we put her in the Prison Room for a day or
two?" chanel reporter bag asked the chief guard
"What is the message?" he saidHe bent down so that
Lina could speak into his earShe noticed that he
smelled a little like overcooked turnips
"Delivery at eight," Lina whispered
The mayor smiled a tight little smileHe turned to
the guard"Just a child's antics," he said"We will let it
go this timeFrom now on," he said to Lina, "behave
yourself
"And you," said the mayor, turning to the assistant
guard and shaking a thick finger at him, "watch
visitors much
Barton Snode blinked and nodded
Lina ran for the doorOutside, the small crowd
was still standing by the stepsA few of them cheered
as Lina came outOthers black chanel handbags frowned at her and muttered
words like "mischief" and "silliness" and "showoff
Lina felt embarrassed suddenlyShe hadn't meant to
show offShe hurried past, out into Otterwill Street,
and started to run
She didn't see Doon, who was among those watching
herHe had been on his way home from his first
day in the Pipeworks when he'd come across the
38
cluster of people gazing up at the roof of the Gathering
Hall and laughingHe was tired and chillyThe
bottoms of his pants legs were wet, and mud clung to
his shoes and smeared his handsWhen he raised his
eyes and saw the small figure next to the clock tower,
he realized right away chanel classic flap that it was LinaHe saw her raise
her arm and wave and hop about, and for a second he
wondered what it would be like to be up there, looking
out over the whole city, laughing and wavingWhen
Lina came down, he wanted to speak to herBut he
knew he was filthy-looking and that she would ask him
questions he didn't want to answer
Walking fast, he headed for home
39
CHAPTER 3
Under Ember
That morning, Doon had arrived at the Pipeworks full
of anticipationThis was the world of serious work at
last, where he would get a chance to do something useful
What he'd learned in school, and from his father,
and from his own chanel logo necklace investigations--he could put it all to
good purpose now
He pushed open the heavy Pipeworks door and
stepped insideThe air smelled strongly of dampness
and moldy rubber, which seemed to him a pleasant,
interesting smellHe strode up a hallway where yellow
slickers hung from pegs on the wallsAt the end of the
hallway was a room full of people, some of them
sitting on benches and pulling on knee-high rubber
boots, some struggling into their slickers, some buckling
on tool beltsA raucous clamor filled the room
Doon watched from the doorway, eager to join in but
not sure what to do
40
After a moment a man emerged from the throng
He thrust out a chanel cc necklace hand |

PARABLE 024: COMPASSION (ANIMAL SANCTUARY)
From Patriarch Hsuan-tsang's Records of the Western Regions:
"The lord of Varanasi once hunted and killed many deer on this landThe deer king implored him to stop the unnecessary killing and promised that each day he himself would give the lord the number of deer which he requiredOne day, he was faced with the necessity of sending a pregnant deerRather than sacrifice her with her unborn child, the deer king went to
the lord to offer his own flesh insteadThe lord was so moved by the deer king's compassion that he stopped the daily killing and gave it the landHence it was named the Deer Park
Sokk: 59-60
Note: The Deer King was Buddha Sakyamuni in a previous lifeHis great act of compassion was met by an equally lofty act which resulted in the creation of an animal sanctuary and a pilgrimage site
PARABLE 025: COMPASSION (THE HIMALAYAN PARROT)
"In a thicket at the foot of the Himalayan Mountains there once lived a parrot together with many other animals and birdsOne day a fire started in the thicket from the friction of bamboos in a strong wind and the birds and animals were in frightened confusionThe parrot, feeling compassion for their fright and suffering, and [remembering] the kindness he had received in the bamboo thicket where he could chanel earrings shelter himself, tried to do all he could to save themHe dipped himself in a pond nearby and flew over the fire and shook off the drops of water to extinguish the fireHe repeated this diligently with a heart of compassion [for all the animals in the thicket]This spirit of compassion and self-sacrifice was noticed by a heavenly god who came down from the sky and said to the parrot: 'You have a gallant mind, but what good do you expect to accomplish by a few drops of water against this great fire?' The parrot answered: 'There is nothing that cannot be accomplished by the spirit of compassion and self-sacrificeI will try over and over again and then over in the next life' The great god was impressed by the parrot's spirit and they together extinguished the fire (The Teaching of the Buddha)

PARABLE 026: CULTIVATION (EASY PATH)
Pure Land School
"The ancients used to say, by way of comparison: Practicing other methods is as difficult and laborious as an ant climbing a high mountain; reciting the Buddha's name seeking rebirth in the Pure Land is as swift and easy as a boat sailing downstream in the direction of the blowing wind
Moreover, once reborn there, living in an auspicious and peaceful environment, always in the company of Buddha Amitabha and the Bodhisattvas, the practitioner will swiftly costume chanel jewelry achieve success in whatever Dharma method he choosesHe is like a log rolling down a high mountain, which just keeps going and never stops, even for a moment
Master Tam: 236
PARABLE 027: CULTIVATION (METAPHYSICAL SPECULATIONS)
Arrow Smeared With Poison
"It is as if a man had been wounded by an arrow thickly smeared with poison, and his friends and kinsmen were to get a surgeon to heal him, and he were to say, I will not have this arrow pulled out until I know by what man I was wounded, whether he is of the warrior caste, or a brahmin, or of the agricultural, or the lowest casteOr if he were to say, I will not have this arrow pulled out until I know of what name or family the man is -- or whether he is tall, or short, or of middle height efore knowing all this, that man would dieSimilarly, it is not on the view that the world is eternal, that it is finite, that body and soul are distinct, or that the Buddha exists after death that a religious life depends
Whether these views or their opposites are held, there is still rebirth, there is old age, there is death, and grief, lamentation, suffering, sorrow, and despair have not spoken to these views because they do not conduce to an absence of passion, to tranquility, and NirvanaAnd what have I explained?
'Suffering have I explained, the cause of cartier roadster replica suffering, the destruction of suffering, and the path that leads to the destruction of suffering have I explained'"
Smith: 142
PARABLE 028: CULTIVATION (MIND AND BODY)
"The Buddha said:
'There was once someone who, plagued by ceaseless sexual desire, wished to castrate himselfThe Buddha said to him, 'To cut off your sexual organs would not be as good as to 'cut off' your mindYour mind is like a
supervisor: if the supervisor stops, his employees will also quitIf the deviant mind is not stopped, what good does it do to cut off the organs?'"

| You go this way?"
"Alas
SOCIETY
This is how it all came aboutSix or seven of us were sitting one day
after teaSome were gazing across the street into the windows of a
milliner's shop where the light still shone brightly upon scarlet
feathers and golden slippersOthers were idly occupied in building
little towers of sugar upon the edge of the tea trayAfter a time, so
far as I can remember, we drew round the fire and began as usual to
praise men--how strong, how noble, how brilliant, how courageous, how
beautiful they were--how we envied those who by hook or by crook managed
to get attached to one for life--when Poll, who had said nothing, burst
into tearsPoll, I must tell you, has always been queerFor one thing
her father was a strange manHe left her a fortune in his will, but on
condition that she read all the books in the coco chanel designer London LibraryWe comforted
her as best we could; but we knew in our hearts how vain it wasFor
though we like her, Poll is no beauty; leaves her shoe laces untied; and
must have been thinking, while we praised men, that not one of them would
ever wish to marry herAt last she dried her tearsFor some time we
could make nothing of what she saidStrange enough it was in all
conscienceShe told us that, as we knew, she spent most of her time in
the London Library, readingShe had begun, she said, with English
literature on the top floor; and was steadily working her way down to the
Times on the bottomAnd now half, or perhaps only a quarter, way through
a terrible thing had happenedShe could read no moreBooks were not
what we thought them"Books," she cried, rising to her feet and speaking
with an intensity of desolation which I shall never forget, "are chanel classic bags for the
most part unutterably bad!"
Of course we cried out that Shakespeare wrote books, and Milton and
Shelley
"Oh, yes," she interrupted us"You've been well taught, I can seeBut
you are not members of the London Library Here her sobs broke forth
anewAt length, recovering a little, she opened one of the pile of books
which she always carried about with her--"From a Window" or "In a Garden,"
or some such name as that it was called, and it was written by a man
called Benton or Henson, or something of that kindShe read the first
few pagesWe listened in silence"But that's not a book," someone said
So she chose anotherThis time it was a history, but I have forgotten
the writer's nameOur trepidation increased as she went onNot a word
of it seemed to be true, and the style in which it was written was
execrable
"Poetry! Poetry!" we cried, prada replica handbags impatiently
"Read us poetry!" I cannot describe the desolation which fell upon us as
she opened a little volume and mouthed out the verbose, sentimental
foolery which it contained
"It must have been written by a woman," one of us urgedShe told
us that it was written by a young man, one of the most famous poets of
the dayI leave you to imagine what the shock of the discovery was
Though we all cried and begged her to read no more, she persisted and
read us extracts from the Lives of the Lord ChancellorsWhen she had
finished, Jane, the eldest and wisest of us, rose to her feet and said
that she for one was not convinced
"Why," she asked, "if men write such rubbish as this, should our mothers
have wasted their youth in bringing them into the world?"
We were all silent; and, in the silence, poor Poll could be heard sobbing
out, "Why, why did my saddle christian dior father teach me to read?"
Clorinda was the first to come to her senses"It's all our fault," she
said"Every one of us knows how to readBut no one, save Poll, has ever
taken the trouble to do itI, for one, have taken it for granted that it
was a woman's duty to spend her youth in bearing childrenI venerated my
mother for bearing ten; still more my grandmother for bearing fifteen; it
was, I confess, my own ambition to bear twentyWe have gone on all these
ages supposing that men were equally industrious, and that their works
were of equal meritWhile we have borne the children, they, we supposed,
have borne the books and the picturesWe have populated the worldThey
have civilized itBut now that we can read, what prevents us from
judging the results? Before we bring another child into the world we must
swear that we will find out what the world is hermes tas |

Many employers feel that advising their workers to mind their own business is bad for businessI am sure it can be for certain individualsBut for me, focusing on my own business, developing assets, made me a better employeeI came in early and worked diligently, amassing as much money as possible so I could begin investing in real estate Hawaii was just set to boom, and there were 4 fortunes to be madeThe more I realized we were in the beginning stages of a boom, the more Xerox machines I soldThe more I sold, the more money I made, and, of course, the more deductions there were from my paycheckI wanted out of the trap of being an employee so badly that I worked harder, not lessBy 1978,I was consistently one of the top five salespeople in sales, often NoI badly wanted out of the rat race
In less chanel pearls than three years, I was making more in my own little corporation, which was a real estate holding company, than I was making at XeroxAnd the money I was making in my asset column, in my own corporation, was money working for me Not me pounding on doors selling copiersMy rich dad's advice made much more sense Soon the cash flow from my properties was so strong that my company bought me my first PorscheMy fellow Xerox salespeople thought I was spending my commissionsI was investing my commissions in assets
My money was working hard to make more money Each dollar in my asset column was a great employee, working hard to make more employees and buy the boss a new Porsche with before-tax dollars I began to work harder for XeroxThe plan was working, and my Porsche was the proof
By using the lessons I learned white prada bag from my rich dad, I was able to get out of the "proverbial rat race" of being an employee at an early ageIt was made possible because of the strong financial knowledge I had acquired through these lessonsWithout this financial knowledge, which I call financial IQ, my road to financial independence would have been much more difficultI now teach others through financial seminars in the hope that I may share my knowledge with themWhenever I do my talks, I remind people that financial IQ is made up of knowledge from four broad areas of expertiseWhat I call financial literacyA vital skill if you want to build an empireThe more money you are responsible for, the more accuracy is required, or the house comes tumbling downThis is the left brain side, or the detailsFinancial literacy is the ability to read omega watch replica and understand financial statementsThis ability allows you to identify the strengths and weaknesses of any businessWhat I call the science of money making moneyThis involves strategies and formulasThis is the right brain side, or the creative side3 is understanding marketsThe science of supply and demandThere is a need to know the "technical" aspects of the market, which is emotion driven; the Tickle Me Elmo doll during Christmas 1996 is a case of a technical or emotion-driven marketThe other market factor is the "fundamental" or the economic sense of an investmentDoes an investment make sense or does it not make sense based on the current market conditions
Many people think the concepts of investing and understanding the market are too complex for kidsThey fail to see that kids know those subjects chanel costume jewelry intuitivelyFor those not familiar with the Elmo doll, it was a Sesame Street character that was highly touted to the kids just before ChristmasMost all kids wanted one, and put it at the top of their Christmas listMany parents wondered if the company intentionally held the product off the market, while continuing to advertise it for ChristmasA panic set in due to high demand and lack of supplyHaving no dolls to buy in the stores, scalpers saw an opportunity to make a small fortune from desperate parentsThe unlucky parents who did not find a doll were forced to buy another toy for ChristmasThe incredible popularity of the Tickle Me Elmo doll made no sense to me, but it serves as an excellent example of supply and demand economicsThe same thing goes on in the stock, bond, real estate and baseball-card balenciaga giant bag mar |

As they went along, they talked less and less; the
path sloped relentlessly upward, and they needed their
breath just for breathingThe only sound was the light pat-pat of their footstepsLina and Doon took turns
carrying Poppy on their backs--she had gotten tired of
walking very soon and cried to be picked upTwice,
they stopped and sat down to rest, leaning against the
walls of the passage and taking drinks from Doon's
bottle of water
251
"How many hours do you think we've been
walking?" Lina asked
"I don't know," Doon saidWe must be nearly there
They climbed on and onTheir first candles had
long ago burned down to the last inch, as had their
second tiffany toggle necklace candlesFinally, when their third ones were
about halfway gone, Lina began to notice that the air
smelled differentThe cold, sharp-edged rock smell of
the tunnel was changing to something softer, a strange,
lovely smellAs they rounded a corner, a gust of this
soft air swept past them, and their candles went out
Doon said, Til find a match," but Lina said, "No,
wait Look
They were not in complete darknessA faint haze
of light shone in the passage ahead of them"It's the
lights of the city," breathed Lina
Lina set Poppy down"Quick, Poppy," she said,
and Poppy began to trot, keeping close at Lina's heels
The strange, lovely smell in the air grew strongerThe
passage came to an end a dolce |

| She put all this into the
dented box and carried it to her room
That evening, Granny and the baby were both
asleep by a little after eightLina had nearly an hour to
examine her discoveryShe took the scraps from the
box and spread them out on the table in her bedroom
The paper was thick; at each torn edge was a fringe of
93
tangled fibersThere were many little pieces and one
big piece with so many holes that it was like laceThe
chewed bits were beyond saving--they were almost a
pasteBut Lina spread out the big lacy piece and saw
that on one edge of it, which was still intact, was a column
of numbersShe collected all the dry scraps and
puzzled over them for a long time, trying to figure out
where they fit into the larger pieceWhen dior rasta bag she had
arranged them as well as she could, this was what she
had:

Lina could make sense of only a few words here
and thereEven so, something about this tattered document
was excitingIt was not like anything Lina had
ever seenShe stared at the very first word at the top of
the page, "Instru," and she suddenly knew what it must
beShe'd seen it often enough at schoolIt had to be
the louis vuitton white speedy beginning of "Instructions
Her heart began knocking at her chest like a fist at
a doorShe had found somethingShe had found
something strange and important: instructions for
somethingBut for what? And how terrible that Poppy
had found it first and ruined it!
It occurred to Lina that this might be what her
grandmother had been talking about for so longPerhaps this was the thing that was lostBut of course not
knowing what had been lost, Granny wouldn't have
recognized the box when she saw itShe would have
95
tossed it out of the closet just as carelessly as she tossed
everything elseAnyhow, it didn't matter whether this
was the thing or not the thingIt was a mystery in
itself, whatever it was, and Lina was determined to
solve 2.55 chanel jumbo it
The first step was to stick the scraps of paper
downThey were so light that a breath could scatter
themShe had a little bit of glue left in an old bottle
Painstakingly, she put a dot of glue on each of the
scraps and pressed each one into its place on one of her
precious few remaining whole sheets of paperShe put
another piece of paper on top of this and set the box
on top to flatten everything downJust as she finished,
the lights went out--she'd forgotten to keep an eye on
the clock on her windowsillShe had to undress and
get in bed in the dark
She was too excited to sleep much that night
Her mind whirled around, trying to think what the
message she'd found might beShe felt sure it had
something to do with saving the cityWhat if replica fendi spy bag these
instructions were for fixing the electricity? Or for making
a movable light? That would change everything
When the lights went on in the morning, she had
a few minutes before Poppy wakened to work at
the puzzleBut there were so many words missing!
How could she ever make sense of such a jumble?
As she pulled on her red jacket and tied the frayed
and knotted laces of her shoes, she thought about it
96
If the paper was important, she shouldn't keep it to
herselfBut who could she tell? Maybe the messenger
captainShe would know about things like official
documents
"Captain Fleery," Lina said when she got to work,
"would you have time to come home with me later on

| ' This little Princess, however ugly, was nevertheless borne by the Queen, and no one dared to look down upon herThe Queen, kindhearted and sympathetic, was merciful to pitiful peopleShe harbored no thoughts of discrimination or despise as she ministered to their needsWell aware of the Queen's virtues, King Prasenajit secretly sent a trusted aid to find a gentle and kind nursemaid to raise the Princess in the palace
In time, Princess Vajra became a grown woman; she was waiting for a right man to marryKing Prasenajit was then faced with the difficult task of having to arrange for the marriage of his ugly daughterHe thought it over and over, but was unable to come up with a good planHe then told a couple of cautious ministers: 'Please go on my behalf and search for a scion of a prestigious family, who, due to a fall in his family fortune, is unable to support himself or find a wifeIf you find such a young man, bring him to me'
Soon chanel shopping bags thereafter, an old minister brought along a poor young manHe led him to a quiet, remote place, and reported back to the KingHearing of the news, the King was very pleasedDressed in ordinary clothing, he approached this young man in an amiable manner, and without further ado, broached the subject of marriageIn a plainspoken tone he said: 'My only daughter is now a grown womanUnfortunately, she is ugly, and it is difficult to find her a husbandI've heard that you are from a once prominent family which has suffered a loss of its fortuneAs a result, you can't afford to get married and support a family of your ownNow I'm willing to betroth my daughter to youI'll provide for all your daily needs and expensesI hope you'll understand my well-meaning intentions and accept the Princess as your wifeOnce you marry her, all blessings will naturally be bestowed on you' The young man knelt before the King and replied: 'In deference to Your prada handbags sale Majesty, I will obey your orderI'd be obliged for the honor even if Your Majesty were to give a stupid maid to me in marriageI'm all the more grateful since Her Highness is Your Majesty's own flesh and blood'
The King was delightedHe thus gave the ugly Princess Vajra to this young man in marriage, and built them a palaceInside the palace, seven layers of doors were installed to lock the Princess up for a long, long time into the futureThe Imperial Son- in-law carried the keys with him at all times so that neither the outsiders nor the insiders could get in or outAll the daily necessities and expenses were provided for by the KingHe had a minister, who was in charge of the warehouses, deliver supplies to them as needed to avoid any shortageFearing that his Imperial Son-in-law might be despised by others, the King installed him as a high feudal lordBy that time, the King's worries were finally taken care of; and he felt that a great omega de ville men's watches burden carried for many years had now been taken off his mindOne can only imagine how delighted he was
According to the customs of that country, all the noble and prestigious families would take turns hosting a party once a month with the purpose of strengthening the social ties among themselvesThe guests, both ladies and gentlemen, would dance and hobnob in the high spirits of revelryThey would arrive in pairs, each with his or her spouse, except the Imperial Son-in-law who always showed up by himselfPeople gossiped stealthilyThey presumed that if the Princess was not a matchless beauty, she had to be the ugliest woman in the worldWhy else would he hide her anyway? Several troublemakers went into a huddle, and decided: 'Since he wouldn't let the Princess reveal herself to us, we've got to find a way to see herWe'll stop at nothing until we have our way!' So they devised a ruseAfter the banquet started, by ingratiating themselves with chanel quilted handbag the Imperial Son-in-law, they coaxed him into a drinking contestOnce having succeeded in getting him dead drunk, they searched him for a string of keysWith the keys in hand, five elected representatives immediately dashed off to the palace
Earlier that morning, after her husband had left for the party, Princess Vajra became very upsetShe plaintively reproached herself 'I wonder what evil karma I created in my previous lives, for now I am imprisoned by my father and detested by my husbandHe always locks me up in the innermost chamberI can't even see the sun or the people outside' Thereupon she transformed her thinking, and said to herself 'I am really blessed to be born at a time when the Buddha is in this worldI've heard that the Buddhadharma is limitless and benefits all living beingsAnyone who is suffering only needs to truly repent and humbly beseech the Buddha, and, by His grace, will surely be conferred blessings and dolce and gabbana bags liberation |

|
| The pages inside those marble-looking
envelopes must be cut deep and scored thick with meaningIsabella would
come in, and take them, one by one, very slowly, and open them, and read
them carefully word by word, and then with a profound sigh of
comprehension, as if she had seen to the bottom of everything, she would
tear the envelopes to little bits and tie the letters together and lock
the cabinet drawer in her determination to conceal what she did not wish
to be known
The thought served as a challengeIsabella did not wish to be known--but
she should no longer escapeIt was absurd, it was monstrousIf she
concealed so much and knew so much one must prise her open with the
first tool that came to hand--the imaginationOne must fix one's mind
upon her at that very momentOne must fasten her down thereOne must
refuse to be put off any longer with sayings and doings such as the
moment brought forth--with dinners and visits and polite conversations
One must put oneself in her shoesIf one took the phrase literally, it
was easy to see the shoes in which she stood, down in the lower garden,
at prada replica handbags this momentThey were very narrow and long and fashionable--they were
made of the softest and most flexible leatherLike everything she wore,
they were exquisiteAnd she would be standing under the high hedge in
the lower part of the garden, raising the scissors that were tied to her
waist to cut some dead flower, some overgrown branchThe sun would beat
down on her face, into her eyes; but no, at the critical moment a veil
of cloud covered the sun, making the expression of her eyes doubtful--was
it mocking or tender, brilliant or dull? One could only see the
indeterminate outline of her rather faded, fine face looking at the sky
She was thinking, perhaps, that she must order a new net for the
strawberries; that she must send flowers to Johnson's widow; that it was
time she drove over to see the Hippesleys in their new houseThose were
the things she talked about at dinner certainlyBut one was tired of
the things that she talked about at dinnerIt was her profounder state
of being that one wanted to catch and turn to words, the state that is
to the mind what breathing is to the body, what one coco chanel jewelry calls happiness or
unhappinessAt the mention of those words it became obvious, surely,
that she must be happyShe was rich; she was distinguished; she had
many friends; she travelled--she bought rugs in Turkey and blue pots in
PersiaAvenues of pleasure radiated this way and that from where she
stood with her scissors raised to cut the trembling branches while the
lacy clouds veiled her face
Here with a quick movement of her scissors she snipped the spray of
travellers' joy and it fell to the groundAs it fell, surely some light
came in too, surely one could penetrate a little farther into her being
Her mind then was filled with tenderness and regretTo cut an
overgrown branch saddened her because it had once lived, and life was
dear to herYes, and at the same time the fall of the branch would
suggest to her how she must die herself and all the futility and
evanescence of thingsAnd then again quickly catching this thought up,
with her instant good sense, she thought life had treated her well; even
if fall she must, it was to lie on the earth and moulder sweetly into
the roots of gucci watch bands violetsSo she stood thinkingWithout making any thought
precise--for she was one of those reticent people whose minds hold their
thoughts enmeshed in clouds of silence--she was filled with thoughtsHer
mind was like her room, in which lights advanced and retreated, came
pirouetting and stepping delicately, spread their tails, pecked their
way; and then her whole being was suffused, like the room again, with a
cloud of some profound knowledge, some unspoken regret, and then she was
full of locked drawers, stuffed with letters, like her cabinetsTo talk
of "prising her open" as if she were an oyster, to use any but the
finest and subtlest and most pliable tools upon her was impious and
absurdOne must imagine--here was she in the looking-glass
She was so far off at first that one could not see her clearlyShe came
lingering and pausing, here straightening a rose, there lifting a pink
to smell it, but she never stopped; and all the time she became larger
and larger in the looking-glass, more and more completely the person
into whose mind one had been trying to penetrateOne verified her women's tank watch replica by
degrees--fitted the qualities one had discovered into this visible body
There were her grey-green dress, and her long shoes, her basket, and
something sparkling at her throatShe came so gradually that she did
not seem to derange the pattern in the glass, but only to bring in some
new element which gently moved and altered the other objects as if
asking them, courteously, to make room for herAnd the letters and the
table and the grass walk and the sunflowers which had been waiting in
the looking-glass separated and opened out so that she might be received
among themAt last there she was, in the hallShe
stood by the tableShe stood perfectly stillAt once the lookingglass
began to pour over her a light that seemed to fix her; that seemed like
some acid to bite off the unessential and superficial and to leave only
the truthIt was an enthralling spectacleEverything dropped from
her--clouds, dress, basket, diamond--all that one had called the creeper
and convolvulusHere was the hard wall beneathHere was the woman
herselfShe stood naked in that pitiless lightAnd there was nothing

| It's an old conditioning from their childhoodTheir desire to have the finer things that life offersMost have been conditioned subconsciously to say, "You can't have that," or ;
"You'll never afford that
When I decided to exit the rat race, it was simply a question "How can I afford to never work again?" And my mind began to kick out answers and solutionsThe hardest part was fighting my real parents' dogma of "We can't afford that Or "Stop thinking only about yourself Or "Why don't you think about others?" and other such words designed to instill guilt to suppress my greed
So how do you beat laziness? The answer is a little greed It's miu miu clutch that radio station WII-FM, which stands for "What's In It-For Me?" A person needs to sit down and ask, "What's in it for me if I'm healthy, sexy and good looking?" Or "What would my life be like if I never had to work again?" Or "What would I do if I had all the money I needed?" Without that little greed, the desire to have something better, progress is not madeOur world progresses because we all desire a better life New inventions are made because we desire something betterWe go to school and study hard because we want something better So whenever you find yourself avoiding something you know you should be doing, then the only thing to chanel wallet ask yourself is "What's in it for me?" Be a little greedyIt's the best cure for laziness
Too much greed, however, as anything in excess can be, is not goodBut just remember what Michael Douglas said in the movie Wall Street Rich dad said it differently: "Guilt is worse than greed
For guilt robs the body of its soul And to me, Eleanor Roosevelt said it best: "Do what you feel in your heart to be right-for you'll be criticized anywayYou'll be damned if you do, and damned if you don'tOur lives are a reflection of our habits more than our educationAfter seeing the movie Conan, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, a friend said, "I'd love to have a gucci silver bag body like Schwarzenegger Most of the guys nodded in agreement
"I even heard he was really puny and skinny at one time," another friend added
"Yeah, I heard that too," another one added "I heard he has a habit of working out almost every day in the gym
"Yeah, I'll bet he has to
"Nah," said the group cynic "I'll bet he was born that wayBesides, let's stop talking about Arnold and get some beers
This is an example of habits controlling behaviorI remember asking my rich dad about the habits of the richInstead of answering me outright, he wanted me to learn through example, as usual
"When does your dad pay his bills?" rich dad asked
"The mulberry vintage first of the month," I said
"Does he have anything left over?" he asked
"Very little," I said
"That's the main reason he struggles," said rich dad
"Your dad pays everyone else firstHe pays himself last, but only if he has anything left over
"Which he usually doesn't," I said"But he has to pay his bills, doesn't he? You're saying he shouldn't pay his bills?"
"Of course not," said rich dad "I firmly believe in paying my bills on timeI just pay myself first Before I pay even the government
"But what happens if you don't have enough money?" I asked"What do you do then?"
"The same," said rich dad "I still pay myself firstEven if I'm short of chanel necklace mo |
