| But
you are not members of the London Library Here her sobs broke forth
anewAt length, recovering a little, she opened one of the pile of books
which she always carried about with her--"From a Window" or "In a Garden,"
or some such name as that it was called, and it was written by a man
called Benton or Henson, or something of that kindShe read the first
few pagesWe listened in silence"But that's not a book," someone said
So she chose anotherThis time it was a history, but I have forgotten
the writer's nameOur trepidation increased as she went onNot a word
of it seemed to be true, and the style in which it was written was
execrable
"Poetry! Poetry!" we cried, impatiently
"Read us poetry!" I cannot describe the desolation which fell upon us as
she opened a little volume and mouthed out the verbose, sentimental
foolery which it contained
"It must have been written by a woman," one of us urgedShe told
us that it was written by a young man, one of the most famous poets of
the dayI leave you to imagine what the shock of the discovery was
Though chanel white watches we all cried and begged her to read no more, she persisted and
read us extracts from the Lives of the Lord ChancellorsWhen she had
finished, Jane, the eldest and wisest of us, rose to her feet and said
that she for one was not convinced
"Why," she asked, "if men write such rubbish as this, should our mothers
have wasted their youth in bringing them into the world?"
We were all silent; and, in the silence, poor Poll could be heard sobbing
out, "Why, why did my father teach me to read?"
Clorinda was the first to come to her senses"It's all our fault," she
said"Every one of us knows how to readBut no one, save Poll, has ever
taken the trouble to do itI, for one, have taken it for granted that it
was a woman's duty to spend her youth in bearing childrenI venerated my
mother for bearing ten; still more my grandmother for bearing fifteen; it
was, I confess, my own ambition to bear twentyWe have gone on all these
ages supposing that men were equally industrious, and that their works
were of equal meritWhile we have borne the children, they, we chanel necklace supposed,
have borne the books and the picturesWe have populated the worldThey
have civilized itBut now that we can read, what prevents us from
judging the results? Before we bring another child into the world we must
swear that we will find out what the world is like
So we made ourselves into a society for asking questionsOne of us was
to visit a man-of-war; another was to hide herself in a scholar's study;
another was to attend a meeting of business men; while all were to read
books, look at pictures, go to concerts, keep our eyes open in the
streets, and ask questions perpetuallyYou can judge
of our simplicity when I tell you that before parting that night we
agreed that the objects of life were to produce good people and good
booksOur questions were to be directed to finding out how far these
objects were now attained by menWe vowed solemnly that we would not
bear a single child until we were satisfied
Off we went then, some to the British Museum; others to the King's Navy;
some to Oxford; others to Cambridge; we visited the Royal Academy fendi spy and the
Tate; heard modern music in concert rooms, went to the Law Courts, and
saw new playsNo one dined out without asking her partner certain
questions and carefully noting his repliesAt intervals we met together
and compared our observationsOh, those were merry meeting! Never have I
laughed so much as I did when Rose read her notes upon "Honour" and
described how she had dressed herself as an Ethiopian Prince and gone
aboard one of His Majesty's shipsDiscovering the hoax, the Captain
visited her (now disguised as a private gentleman) and demanded that
honour should be satisfied
"With the cane of course!" Seeing that he was beside himself with rage
and expecting that her last moment had come, she bent over and received,
to her amazement, six light taps upon the behind"The honour of the
British Navy is avenged!" he cried, and, raising herself, she saw him
with the sweat pouring down his face holding out a trembling right hand
"Away!" she exclaimed, striking an attitude and imitating the ferocity of
his own expression, "My honour has still to be dolce |

| This period we are in now is a most exciting time, unprecedented in our world's historyGenerations from now, people will look back at this period of time and remark at what an exciting era it must have beenIt was the death of the old and birth of the newIt was full of turmoil and it was exciting
So why bother developing your financial IQ? Because if you do, you will prosper greatlyAnd if you don't, this period of time will be a frightening oneIt will be a time of watching people move boldly forward while others cling to decaying life rings
Land was wealth 300 years agoSo the person who owned the land owned the wealthThen, it was factories and production, and America rose to dominanceThe industrialist owned the wealthToday, it is informationAnd vintage omega watches the person who has the most timely information owns the wealthThe problem is, information flies all around the world at the speed of lightThe new wealth cannot be contained by boundaries and borders as land and factories wereThe changes will be faster and more dramaticThere will be a dramatic increase in the number of new multimillionairesThere also will be those who are left behind
Today, I find so many people struggling, often working harder, simply because they cling to old ideasThey want things to be the way they were; they resist change I know people who are losing their jobs or their houses, and they blame technology or the economy or their bossSadly they fail to realize that they might be the problemOld ideas are their biggest liability ceramic chanel It is a liability simply because they fail to realize that while that idea or way of doing something was an asset yesterday, yesterday is gone
One afternoon I was teaching investing using a board game I had invented, CASHFLOW, as a teaching toolA friend had brought someone along to attend the classThis friend of a friend was recently divorced, had been badly burned in the divorce settlement, and was now searching for some answersHer friend thought the class might help
The game was designed to help people learn how money worksIn playing the game, they learn about the interaction of the income statement with the balance sheetThey learn how "cash flows" between
the two and how the road to wealth is through striving to increase your monthly cash louis cartier flow from the asset column to the point that it exceeds your j monthly expensesOnce you accomplish this, you are able to get out of the "Rat Race" and out onto the "Fast Track"
As I have said, some people hate the game, some love it, and others miss the pointThis woman missed a valuable opportunity to learn somethingIn the opening round, she drew a "doodad" card with the boat on itAt first she was happy "Oh, I've got a boat Then, as her friend tried to explain how the numbers worked on her income statement and balance sheet, she got frustrated because she "had never liked mathThe rest of her table waited while her friend continued explaining the relationship between the income statement, balance sheet and monthly cash flow Suddenly, when she black fendi spy bag realized how the numbers worked, it dawned on her that her boat was eating her aliveLater on in the game, she was also "downsized" and had a childIt was a horrible game for her
After the class, her friend came by and told me that she was upsetShe had come to the class to learn about investing and did not like the idea that it took so long to play a silly game
Her friend attempted to tell her to look within herself to see if the game "reflected" on herself in any wayWith that suggestion, the woman demanded her money backShe said that the very idea that a game could be a reflection of her was ridiculousHer money was promptly refunded and she left
Since 1984, I have made millions simply by doing what the school system does notIn school, most teachers cartier watches women lect |

CHAPTER 1
What Torren Saw
Torren was out at the edge of the cabbage field that
day, the day the people cameHe was supposed to be fetching a couple of cabbages for DrHester to use in
the soup that night, but, as usual, he didn't see why he
shouldn't have some fun while he was at itSo he
climbed up the wind tower, which he wasn't supposed
to do because, they said, he might fall or get his head
sliced off by the big blades going round and round
The wind tower was four-sided, made of boards
nailed one above the next like the rungs of a ladder
Torren climbed the back side of it, the side that faced
the hills and not the village, so that the little group of
workers hoeing the cabbage rows wouldn't see himAt
the top, he turned around and sat on the flat place
behind the blades, which turned slowly in the idle
summer breezeHe had brought a pocketful of small
stones up with him, planning on some target practice:
he liked to try to hit the chickens that rummaged
around between the rows gucci new bag of cabbagesHe thought it
might be fun to bounce a few pebbles off the hats of
the workers, tooBut before he had even taken the
stones from his pocket, he caught sight of something
that made him stop and stare
Out beyond the cabbage field was another field,
where young tomato and corn and squash plants were
growing, and beyond that the land sloped up into a
grassy hillside dotted, at this time of year, with yellow
mustard flowersTorren saw something strange at the
top of the hill
There were bits of darkness at first?for a second
he thought maybe it was a deer, or several deer, black
ones instead of the usual light brown, but the shape
was wrong for deer, and the way these things moved
was wrong, tooHe realized very soon that he was seeing
people, a few people at first and then more and
more of themThey came up from the other side of the
hill and gathered at the top and stood there, a long line
of them against the sky, like a row of black teethThere
must have been a hundred, chanel logo necklace Torren thought, or more
than a hundred
In all his life, Torren had never seen more than
three or four people at a time arrive at the village from
elsewhereAlmost always, the people who came were
roamers, passing through with a truckload of stuff
from the old towns to sellThis massing of people on
the hilltop terrified himFor a moment he couldn't
moveThen his heart started up a furious pounding,
and he scrambled down off the wind tower so fast that
he scraped his hands on the rough boards
"Someone's coming!" he shouted as he passed the
workersThey looked up, startledTorren ran at full
speed toward the low cluster of brown buildings at the
far end of the fieldHe turned up a dirt lane, his feet
raising swirls of dust, and dashed through the gate in
the wall and across the courtyard and in through the
open door, all the time yelling, "Someone's coming! Up
on the hill! Auntie Hester! Someone's coming!"
He found his aunt in the kitchen, and he grabbed
her by the waist of her pants and chanel classic bag cried, "Come and see!
There's people on the hill!" His voice was so shrill and
urgent and loud that his aunt dropped the spoon into
the pot of soup she'd been stirring and hurried after
himBy the time they got outside, others from the village
were leaving their houses, too, and looking toward
the hillside
The people were coming downOver the crest of
the hill they came and kept coming, dozens of them,
more and more, like a mudslide
The people of the village crowded into the streets
"Get Mary Waters!" someone called"Where's Ben and
Wilmer? Find them, tell them to get out here!"
Torren was less frightened now that he was surrounded
by the townspeople"I saw them first," he said
to Hattie Carranza, who happened to be hurrying
along next to him"I was the one who told the news
"Is that right," said Hattie
"We won't let them do anything bad to us," said
Torren"If they do, we'll do something worse to them
Won't we?"
But she just glanced down at him with a vague
frown and didn't gucci women's watches ans |

| "This
word must be PipeworksAnd look
at this one--door
Doon didn't answerHis hair had fallen forward,
so Lina couldn't see the expression on his face
"I thought at first," Lina went on, "that it must be
instructions for how to do somethingHow to fix the
electricity, maybeBut then I thought, What if it's
instructions for going to another place?" Doon said
nothing, so Lina went on"I mean someplace that isn't
here, like another cityI think these instructions say,
'Go down into the Pipeworks and look for a hermes kelly handbag door'"
Doon brushed the hair back from his face, but he
didn't straighten upHe gazed at the broken words and
frownedWhat
would that mean?"
"A frying pan?" said Lina"But I don't know why
there'd be a frying pan in the Pipeworks
But Doon didn't answerHe seemed to be talking
124
to himselfHe kept reading, moving a finger along the
lines of words
Finally he turned to look at Lina"I think you're
right," he said"I think this is important
"Oh, I was sure you'd think so!" Lina criedShe
was so relieved that her chanel black tote bag words poured out in a rush
"Because you take things seriously! You told the truth
to the mayor on Assignment DayI didn't want to
believe it, but then came the long blackout, and I
knew--I knew things were as bad as you said She
stopped, breathlessShe pointed to a word on the document
"This door," she said"It has to be a door that
leads out of Ember
"I don't know," said DoonOr a door that
leads to something important, even if it isn't that
"But it must be that--what else could be important
enough to lock up in a fancy black and white chanel box?"
"WellI suppose it could be a storage room with
some special tools in it or something--" A look of surprise
came over his face"Actually, I saw a door where
I didn't expect to see one--out in Tunnel 351I thought it was an old supply closetI wonder
if that could be it
"It must be!" cried Lina
"It wasn't anywhere near the river," Doon said
doubtfully
"That doesn't matter!" Lina said"The river goes

through the Pipeworks, that's allIt's probably something
like, cGo down by the river, then go this white prada bag way, then
that way'"
"Maybe," said Doon
"It must be!" Lina cried"I know it is! It's the door
that leads out of Ember
"I don't know if that makes sense," said Doon"A
door in the Pipeworks could only lead to something
underground, and how could that
Lina had no patience for Doon's reasoningShe
wanted to dance around the room, she was so excited
"We have to find out," she said"We have to find out
right away!"
Doon looked startled"Well, I can go and try
the door again," he said"It was locked before, but j12 chanel diamond watch I

| Suparaga replied to them: 'I am an old man, how much assistance do you think I can be? My mind wanders, my body is weak, and my eyesight is almost gone' But the merchants persisted: 'We do not care about your physical condition, we do not want you for your strength; we want you for your presence alone'
So, out of compassion, Suparaga, though old and ailing, boarded the vessel -- and they set off, with all the merchants rejoicing
Soon the ship lost sight of shore and found itself in the realm of the Sea Serpents, that part of the great ocean haunted by strange fish -- a sea which churned with surging waves buffeted by the whims of the screaming and crying windPrecious stones lay in the hidden depths where nagas lived
For days, the wind and sea ran high, and the vessel moved with the currentNo land came in sight and no favorable sign came from the seaThe signs they did see were strange to them, and the merchants grew increasingly distraught, bedeviled by fear and despairBut Suparaga, the Bodhisattva, comforted them saying: 'For those who would cross the chanel earrings stud great ocean, such
portentous turmoil is the ruleWhy wonder at it and fall prey to fear and emotionality?'
Before long, they found themselves approaching another sea, one shining with silver luster, bright with a mass of white frothThe merchants said to Suparaga: 'What great sea is this, its waters veiled in foam like fine white linen? It seems covered with liquid moonbeams; it seems to show a laughing face'
Suparaga said: 'This is difficultWe are driven too farThis is the sea called Milk OceanWe should go no furtherTurn back if you can!' But the merchants replied: 'The ship goes too quickly; the winds are too strongIt is impossible even to slow down, much less change courseThe current drives us too swiftly and the winds blow contrary'
Then having crossed that sea, they came to another, its rolling waves tinted with a golden splendor the color of flamesFilled with amazement, the merchants said to Suparaga: 'Now the water appears like a huge, blazing fire! The waves are not blue, but seem tinged by the rising sunWhat sea is this? Why is it this tiffany cross color?'
Suparaga did not think it advisable to reveal the reason for the ocean's hue, but said only: 'The sea of Fire Garlands is its nameIt would be wise indeed for us to turn back now'
But they were unable to turn the ship, no matter how hard they struggledAnd soon they were crossing into another sea, as green as the most brilliant emeraldThe merchants said to Suparaga: 'Now the sea has yet another appearanceIts waters are the color of emerald or aquamarine, and they shine like a beautiful meadowWhat sea is this?'
Hearing this, Suparaga heaved a long and deep sigh, his heart aching with knowledge of the calamity that was imminentIn a low voice, he spoke: 'We have gone too farFrom here it will be hard to returnThis is the Sea of Reeds at the end of the world'
When they heard these words, the poor merchants were plunged into despairMinds lethargic, limbs without power, they sat in dull apathy and did nothing but sigh
After crossing that sea, in the afternoon near twilight, when the sun seemed to be setting into the ocean, a fearsome and tremendous noise chanel pearls aroseThe ear-splitting sound struck fear into their heartsIt sounded like the sea rising in anger, like bamboo groves crackling with fire, like thunderclaps
Suparaga, alarmed, cried out: 'Alas! Alas! You have come to the dreadful place from which no one returns, the Mare's Mouth, the mouth of the Lord of Death!'
At this, the poor merchants were stunned by the fear of deathRealizing that all hope was lost, they wept, moaned and cried aloud to Suparaga: 'You, who have the ability to help all beings, who have so often relieved those in distress, now is the time to use your power for actionWe take refuge in you, for we are sorely distressed and without any protectionThe wrathful waters are about to swallow us like a morsel of foodThe great Ocean will obey your command! Please put a stop to its terrible rage!'
Suparaga, his heart bursting with compassion, comforted the poor merchants, saying: 'I think I see a way to rescue us, but you must harness all your courage'
Suparaga then threw his robe over one shoulder, knelt on the deck of the ship, and bowing down buy chanel bag paid homage to the TathagatasThen he said: 'You, honorable sea traders, and you, sky and ocean-dwelling gods, listen and be my witnessSince my first conscious deed, I cannot recall even one instance of having injured any living beingBy the power of this act of truth, by the strength of my store of virtuous actions, may this ship turn safely around without falling into the Mare's Mouth of death'
And so great was the power of his truth, so great was the splendor of his merit, that the current and wind changed to the opposite direction, causing the vessel to return the way it came
And the ship, filled with the sound of her merry, laughing crew, her lovely white sails spread like wings, flew over the sea, a white swan in a pure and cloudless sky

| Instead of answering me outright, he wanted me to learn through example, as usual
"When does your dad pay his bills?" rich dad asked
"The first of the month," I said
"Does he have anything left over?" he asked
"Very little," I said
"That's the main reason he struggles," said rich dad
"Your dad pays everyone else firstHe pays himself last, but only if he has anything left over
"Which he usually doesn't," I said"But he has to pay his bills, doesn't he? You're saying he shouldn't pay his bills?"
"Of course not," said rich dad "I firmly believe in paying my bills on timeI just pay myself first Before I pay chanel cc logo earrings even the government
"But what happens if you don't have enough money?" I asked"What do you do then?"
"The same," said rich dad "I still pay myself firstEven if I'm short of moneyMy asset column is far more important to me than the government "Don't they come after you?"
"Yes, if you don't pay," said rich dad "Look, I did not say not to payI just said I pay myself first, even if I'm short of money "How do you do that'"
"It's not howThe question is 'Why,'" rich dad said
"OK, why?"
"Motivation," said rich dad "Who do you think will complain louder if I don't pay them-me or my creditors?"
"Your creditors dolce and gabbana bags will definitely scream louder than you," I said, responding to the obvious"You wouldn't say anything if you didn't pay yourself
"So you see, after paying myself, the pressure to pay my taxes and the other creditors is so great that it forces me to seek other forms of incomeThe pressure to pay becomes my motivationI've worked extra jobs, started other companies, traded in the stock market, anything just to make sure those guys don't start yelling at meThat pressure made me work harder, forced me to think, and all in all made me smarter and more active when it comes to moneyIf I had paid myself last, I would miu miu clutch have felt no pressure, but I'd be broke
"So it is the fear of the government or other people you owe money I to that motivates you?"
"That's right," said rich dad"You see, government bill collectors are big bulliesSo are bill collectors in generalMost people give into these bulliesThey pay them and never pay themselvesYou know the story of the 96-pound weakling who gets sand kicked in his face?"
I nodded "I see that ad for weightlifting and bodybuilding lessons in the comic books all the time
"Well, most people let the bullies kick sand in their facesI decided to use the fear of the bully to make me saddle handbags strongerForcing myself to think about how to make extra money is like going to the gym and working out with weightsThe more I work my mental money muscles out, the stronger I getNow, I'm not afraid of those bullies
I liked what rich dad was saying "So if I pay myself first, I get financially stronger, mentally and fiscally
"And if I pay myself last, or not at all, I get weakerSo people like bosses, managers, tax collectors, bill collectors and landlords push me around all my lifeJust because I don't have good money habits "Just like the 96-pound weaklingArrogance is ego plus ignoranceI "What I know makes me buy chanel bag mon |

"Well, you've never talked to meI've worked for three weeks, and you have not taught me anything," I said with a pout
"Does teaching mean talking or a lecture?" rich dad asked
"Well, yes," I replied
"That's how they teach you in school," he said smiling"But that is not how life teaches you, and I would say that life is the best teacher of allMost of the time, life does not talk to youIt just sort of pushes you aroundEach push is life saying, `Wake upThere's something I want you to learn' "
"What is this man talking about?" I asked myself silently"Life pushing me saddle christian dior around was life talking to me?" Now I knew I had to quit my jobI was talking to someone who needed to be locked up
"If you learn life's lessons, you will do wellIf not, life will just continue to push you aroundSome just let life push them aroundOthers get angry and push backBut they push back against their boss, or their job, or their husband or wifeThey do not know it's life that's pushing
I had no idea what he was talking about

| It must be an E,
though you wouldn't know it if you weren't looking for
it
"You mean the rock marked with an E? In the
Pipeworks?"
"Yes, yes, I found it!" He stood breathing hard, his
eyes blazing"I'd seen it before, hut I didn't think of it
as an E then, just a squiggle that looked like writing
There are all these rocks that look like they're covered
with writing
"Which rocks? Where is it?" Lina was on her feet
now, bouncing with excitement
"Down at the west end of the riverNear where it
goes into that great hole in the Pipeworks wall He
paused, trying to catch his breath"And listen," he said
"We could go there right now
"Right now?"
"Yes, because of rehearsalsEveryone's cartier watches going
home, so the Pipeworks will be closed and empty
"But if it's closed, how will we get in?"
Grinning, Doon produced a large key from his
pocket"I ducked into the office on my way out and
borrowed the spare key," he said"Lister--he's the
Pipeworks director--was in the bathroom practicing
his singingHe won't miss the key todayAnd
tomorrow, everyone will be off work He did an
impatient shuffle"So come on," he said
The town clock struck the first of its twelve noon
180
time boomsLina stuffed her copy of the Instructions
back in her pocket
The Pipeworks was empty and silentLina and Doon
went up the hallway past the rows of boots and the
slickers hanging on their hooksThey picasso cartier didn't take any
of these for themselvesThis was not a Pipeworks
tunnel they were about to enter, they were sure; it
wouldn't be dripping with water or lined with spurting
pipes
They went down the long stairway and out into
the main tunnel, where the river thundered alongside
the path, its dark surface strewn with flecks of light
Doon led the way along the river's edgeAs they
neared the west end, Lina saw the rocky outcroppings
Doon had described to herThey were strange bulging
shapes creased with lines like the faces of the very old
Not far beyond, Lina could see the place where the
river disappeared into a great hole in the Pipeworks
wall
Doon knelt down beside a clump of stonesHe balenciaga blue ran
a finger over their convoluted surface"Look here," he
saidLina stooped down and peered at the deeply
carved linesIt was hard to see the E at first, because it
was surrounded by such a tangle of other lines, and
because she was expecting it to be an E drawn with
straight strokesBut once she saw it--an E drawn with
curving lines, a script E--she was sure it had been
181
carved on purpose: it was centered on its stone, and its
lines were deep and even
"So from here we should look down at the river,"
said Doon"That's what the Instructions said, 'down
riverbank to ledge'
He lay on his stomach next to the rock and inched
forward until his head hung out over the edge of dolce and gabbana bags the
pathLina watched him anxiouslyHis elbows stuck up
on either side of him, and his head, bent down, was
nearly invisibleHe stayed that way for long seconds
Then he shouted, "Yes! I see something!" and
scrambled to his feet again"Look
at the riverbank right below us
Lina did as he hadShe lay down and pulled herself
forward until her head was over the edgeEight
feet or so below her, she saw the black water churning
byShe tucked her chin in and looked at the riverbank
It was a sheer rock wall, straight up and down and slick
with spray, and at first that was all she sawBut she kept
looking and before long could make out short iron
bars bolted into the bank, one below the next, almost
directly below tiffany toggle necklace |

the carrots into a little dish, and took these back to the
baby on the couch

ate some of her carrots and poked others between the

She bent down so that her ear was close to his whiskery mouth
The old man said in a slow, hoarse voice, "My

Lina repeated the message
"Good," said Natty PrineHe gave Lina twenty
