CHAPTER FIVE
Lesson Four:The History of and The Power of Corporation
I remember in school being told the story of Robin Hood and his Merry MenMy schoolteacher thought it was a wonderful story of a romantic hero, a Kevin Costner type, who robbed from the rich and gave to the poorMy rich dad did not see Robin Hood as a heroHe called Robin Hood a crook
Robin Hood may be long gone, but his followers live onHow often I still hear people say, "Why don't the rich pay for it?" Or "The rich should pay more in taxes and give it to the poor
It is this idea of Robin Hood, or taking from the rich to give to the poor that has caused the most pain for the poor and the middle classThe reason the middle class is so heavily taxed is because of the Robin Hood idealThe real reality is that the rich are not taxedIt's the middle class who pays for the poor, especially the educated upper-income middle class
Again, to understand fully vintage gucci bags how things happen, we need to look at the historical perspectiveWe need to look at the history of taxesAlthough my highly educated dad was an expert on the history of education, my rich dad fashioned himself as an expert on the history of taxes
Rich dad explained to Mike and me that in England and America originally, there were no taxesOccasionally there were temporary taxes levied in order to pay for warsThe king or the president would put the word out and ask everyone to "chip in Taxes were levied in Britain for the fight against Napoleon from 1799 to 1816, and in America taxes were levied to pay for the Civil War from 1861 to 1865
In 1874, England made income tax a permanent levy on its citizensIn 1913, an income tax became permanent in the United States with the adoption of the 16th Amendment to the ConstitutionAt one time, Americans were anti-taxIt had been the excessive tax on tea that led to the famous Tea Party in chanel jumbo Boston Harbor, an incident that helped ignite the Revolutionary WarIt took approximately 50 years in both England and '?the United States to sell the idea of a regular income tax;
What these historical dates fail to reveal is that both of these taxes were initially levied against only the richIt was this point that rich dad wanted Mike and me to understandHe explained that the idea of taxes was made popular, and accepted by the majority, by telling the poor and the middle class that taxes were created only to punish the richThis is how the masses voted for the law, and it became constitutionally legalAlthough it was intended to punish the rich, in reality it wound up punishing the very people who voted for it, the poor and middle class
"Once government got a taste of money, the appetite grew," said rich dad"Your dad and I are exactly oppositeHe's a government bureaucrat, and I am a capitalistWe get paid, and our omega 18k watch success is measured on opposite behaviorsHe gets paid to spend money and hire peopleThe more he spends and the more people he hires, the larger his organization becomesIn the government, the larger his organization, the more he is respected On the other hand, within my organization, the fewer people I hire and the less money I spend, the more I am respected by my investorsThat's why I don't like government peopleThey have different objectives from most business peopleAs the government grows, more and more tax dollars will be needed to support it
My educated dad sincerely believed that government should help
peopleKennedy and especially the idea of the Peace CorpsHe loved the idea so much that both he and my mom worked for the Peace Corps training volunteers to go to Malaysia, Thailand and the PhilippinesHe always strived for additional grants and increases in his budget so he could hire more people, both in his job with the dior saddle bags Education Department and in the Peace Corps
From the time I was about 10 years old, I would hear from my rich dad that government workers were a pack of lazy thieves, and from my poor dad I would hear how the rich were greedy crooks who should be made to pay more taxesBoth sides have valid pointsIt was difficult to go to work for one of the biggest capitalists in town and come home to a father who was a prominent government leaderIt was not easy knowing who to believe
Yet, when you study the history of taxes, an interesting perspective emergesAs I said, the passage of taxes was only possible because the masses believed in the Robin Hood theory of economics, which was to take from the rich and give to everyone elseThe problem was that the government's appetite for money was so great that taxes soon needed to be levied on the middle class, and from there it kept "trickling down
The rich, on the other hand, saw an mulberry bags opportunity |

Doon said, "I saw the guards run after youTell me
what happened
"And what about Poppy? What did you tell Mrs
Murdo?"
"I told her the truth--at least I hope it's the truth
I caught up with her on her way home after the
SingingShe'd seen the posters--she was terrified-- but before she could ask questions, I just said she must
give Poppy to meI said I was taking her to safety
Because that's what I suddenly realized on the roof of
the Gathering Hall, DoonI'd been thinking before
that I had to leave Poppy because she'd be safe with
MrsBut when the lights went out, I suddenly
knew: There is no safety in EmberI couldn't leave her behindWhatever happens
to us now, it's better than what's going to omega automatic geneve happen
there
"And did you explain all that to MrsI was in a terrible hurry to get to the
Pipeworks and meet you, and I knew I had to go while
there were still crowds in the street, so it would be
harder for the guards to see meI just said I was taking
Poppy to safetyMurdo handed her over, but she
247
sort of sputtered, 'Where?' and 'Why?' And I said,
'You'll know in a few days--it's all right' And then I
ran
"So you gave her the note, then?" said Doon"The
one meant for Clary?"
"Oh!" Lina stared at him, stricken"The message
to Clary!" She put her hand in her pocket and pulled
out the crumpled piece of paper"I forgot all about it!
All I was thinking of was getting Poppy and balenciaga yellow bag getting to
you
"So no one knows about the room full of boats
Lina just shook her head, her eyes wide"How will
we get back to tell them?"
"We can't
"Doon," said Lina, "if we'd told people right away,
even just a few people if we hadn't decided to be
grand and announce it at the Singing
"I know," said Doon"But we didn't, that's all
We didn't tell, and now no one knowsI did leave a
message for my father, though He told Lina about
pinning his last-minute message to the kiosk in
Selverton Square"I said we'd found the way out, and
that it was in the PipeworksBut that's not much
help
"Clary has seen the Instructions," Lina said"She
knows there's an egress
"Or she might not
There was omega 18k watch nothing to be done about it, and so they

put the supplies back into Doon's pillowcase and got
ready to goLina used Doon's rope to make a leash for
PoppyShe tied one end around Poppy's waist and the
other around her ownShe filled her pockets with
packs of matches, and Doon put all the remaining
candles in his sack--in case they'arrived in the new
city at nightHe filled his bottle with river water, lit a
candle for himself and one for Lina, and thus
equipped, they left the boat behind and crept up the
rocky shelf to the path
249
CHAPTER 19
A World of Light
As they squeezed past the rocks at the entrance to the
path, Doon thought he saw the candlelight glance off a
shiny jumbo chanel flap bag place on the wallHe stopped to look, and when
he saw what it was, he called out to Lina, who was a few
steps ahead of him"There's a notice!"
It was a framed sign, bolted to the stone, a printed
sheet behind a piece of glassDampness had seeped
under the glass and made splotches on the paper, but
by holding their candles up close, they could read it
welcome, Refugees from Ember!
This is the final stage of your journey
Be prepared for a climb
that will take several hours
Fill your bottles with water from the river
We wish you good fortune,
The Builders

"They're expecting us!" said Lina
"Well, they wrote this a long time ago," Doon said

| She tried to be polite, but
she knew she wouldn't goShe didn't want to stand
around waiting for the BuildersShe had other things
to do
Captain Fleery patted her arm"No pressure,
dear," she said"If you change your mind, let me know

But take my advice: forget about your little puzzle
projectLie down and take a nap
Her narrow face beamed kindness down at Lina"You
take tomorrow off," she saidShe raised a hand goodbye
and went down the stairs
Lina took advantage of her day off to go to the
Supply Depot to see Lizzie BiscoLizzie was quick and smartShe might have some good ideas
At the tiffany heart tag necklace Supply Depot, crowds of shopkeepers stood
in long, disorderly lines that stretched out the door
They pushed and jostled and snapped impatiently
at each otherLina joined them, but they seemed so
frantic that they frightened her a littleThey must be very sure now that the supplies are running out, she
thought, and they're determined to get what they can
before it's too late
When she got close to the head of the line, she
heard the same conversation several times"Sorry,"
the clerk would say when a shopkeeper asked for ten
packets of sewing needles, or a dozen drinking glasses,
or twenty packages of light prada handbags sale bulbs"There's a severe
shortage of that itemYou can have only one Or else
the clerk would say, "SorryWe're out of that entirely
"Forever?" "Forever
Lina knew that it hadn't always been this way
When Ember was a young city, the storerooms were
fullThey held everything the citizens could want--so
much it seemed the supplies would never run out
100
Lina's grandmother had told her that schoolchildren
were given a tour of the storerooms as part of their
educationThey took an elevator from the street level
to a long, curving tunnel with doors on both sides and
other tunnels branching off itThe guide led the replicas bolsas tour
down the long passages, opening one door after
another"This area," he would say, "is Canned Goods
Next we come to School SuppliesAnd around this

other to see
"Every room had something different," Granny
told Lina"Boxes of toothpaste in one roomBottles of
cooking oilBoxes of pills--there were
twenty rooms just for vitamin pillsOne room was
stacked with hundreds of cans of fruitThere was
something called pineapple, I remember that one
especially
"What was pineapple?" asked Lina
"It was yellow and sweet," said fendi big Granny with a
dreamy look in her eyes"I had it four times before we
ran out of it
But these tours had been discontinued long before
Lina was bornThe storerooms, people said, were no
longer a pleasure to look atTheir dusty shelves stood
mostly empty nowIt was rumored that in some rooms
nothing was left at allA child seeing the rooms where
powdered milk had been stored, or the rooms that

stored bandages or socks or pins or notebooks, or-- most of all--the dozens of rooms that had once held
thousands of light bulbs--would not feel, as earlier

| ' 'In which way, then, would he be acting properly with regard to the raft? Having crossed and gone over to the other side, suppose that man should think, 'This raft was a great help to meWith its aid I have crossed safely over to this sideIt would be good if I beached this raft on the shore, or moored it and left it afloat, and then went on my way wherever it may be' Acting in this way would that man act properly with regard to the raft'
In the same manner, O monks, I have taught a doctrine similar to a raft -- it is for crossing over, and not for carryingYou who understand that the teaching is similar to a raft, should give up attachment to even the good Dharma; how much more then should you give up evil things34-35
Note: "In the famous parable of the raft the Buddha makes the point that, after using the makeshift raft of Dharma to ferry himself across to the 'Other Shore' of Nirvana, the adept would certainly not put the raft on top of his head and carry it off; rather, since the raft had now served its purpose, it
should be abandoned chloe white on the beachAnd just as the raft of Dharma was to be used for crossing over, and was not to be retained, so should the adept eventually abandon even right mental objects (such as the desire for calm and insight), let alone wrong onesuch warnings are especially characteristic of Zen, but Zen [admonitions] may be seen simply as particularly strong or blunt expressions of a belief held generally throughout Buddhism
Buswell: 5-6
PARABLE 0118: HUMAN REASONING
To approach the sutras "making discriminations and nurturing attachments" is no different from the Zen allegory of a person attempting to lift a chair while seated on itIf he would only get off the chair, he could raise it easilySimilarly, the practitioner truly understands the Dharma only to the extent that he "suspends the operation of the discriminating intellect, the faculty of the internal dialogue through which people from moment to moment define and perpetuate their customary world of perception Editor: na
PARABLE 0119: LAND OF THE BEES
"Once Sakyamuni Buddha and his disciple gucci boston bag Maudgalyayana went with a large gathering of followers to another country to convert living beingsWhen the citizens saw the Buddha they shut their doors and ignored himWhen they saw Maudgalyayana, however, they ran to greet him, and everyone, from the King and ministers to the citizens, all bowed and competed to make offerings to himThe Buddha's disciples thought this most unfair'World Honored One,' they said, 'your virtuous conduct is so lofty; why is it that they do not make offerings to you, but instead compete to make offerings to Maudgalyayana?' 'This is because of past affinities,' said the BuddhaLimitless aeons ago, Maudgalyayana and I were fellow-countrymenHe gathered firewood in the mountains and I lived in a hut belowA swarm of bees was bothering me and I decided to smoke them outBut Maudgalyayana refused to help even though they stung him until his hands were swollen and painfulInstead, he made a vow, "It must be miserable to be a bee," he thought"I vow that when I attain the Way I will try to save these asura-like bees first replica miu miu thing!" Many lifetimes later the bees were reborn as the citizens of this countryThe queen bee became the King,
the drones became the ministers, and the workers became the citizensBecause I didn't like the bees, I now have no affinity with these people and therefore no one makes offerings to meBut because of his vow, all the citizens revere Maudgalyayana'"

PARABLE 0120: THIS MIND IS THE BUDDHA
"Once a monk asked Big Plum what [the famous Zen Patriarch] Matsu taught himBig Plum said, 'This mind is the Buddha' The monk replied, 'Nowadays Matsu teaches That which isn't the mind isn't the Buddha' To this Big Plum replied, 'Let him have That which isn't the mind isn't the BuddhaI'll stick with This mind is the Buddha' When he heard this story, Matsu said, 'The plum is ripe' (Transmission of the Lamp, chapter 7)
Red Pine: 116
PARABLE 0121: REINCARNATION (DOG AND PILE OF GOLD)
"When the Buddha was in the world, he once went to a layman's house to accept offerings
In the house there was a dog that stayed under the bed, day and nightHe big chanel wouldn't allow anyone except members of the family to get near the bedAnyone else who approached it got bittenEven the Buddha was not allowed near the bedThe household experimented to see if the dog would bite the Buddha, and, sure enough, it snapped at himThey asked the Buddha why the dog was so protective of the bedThe Buddha said, 'Don't you know? In its last life the dog was your fatherYour father spent his whole life earning about three hundred ounces of gold and loved it so much he buried it under the bedThen suddenly he got sick and died before he could tell you what he had done with itAfter his death he hurried right back as a dog to guard the pile of goldIf you don't believe me, start digging and you'll find the gold'
They dragged the dog away and did, in fact, uncover exactly three hundred ounces of gold
Master Hsuan Hua: 39
PARABLE 0122: REINCARNATION (SARIPUTRA AND THE DOG)
"There's an incident from the Buddha's timeThere were Bhiksus in the assembly who had certified to ArhatshipSome of them were old and didn't have any gucci black bag teeth |

She cared for nobodyAs for her letters, they were all billsLook, as
she stood there, old and angular, veined and lined, with her high nose
and her wrinkled neck, she did not even trouble to open them
People should not leave looking-glasses hanging in their rooms
THE SHOOTING PARTY
She got in and put her suit case in the rack, and the brace of pheasants
on top of itThen she sat down in the cornerThe train was rattling
through the midlands, and the fog, which came in when she opened the
door, seemed to enlarge the carriage and set the four travellers apart-those were the initials on the suit case--had been
staying the week-end with a shooting partyObviously, for she was
telling over the story now, lying back in her cornerShe did not shut
her eyesBut clearly she did not see the man opposite, nor the coloured
photograph of York MinsterShe must have heard, too, what they had been
sayingFor as she gazed, her lips moved; now cartier watches women and then she smiledAnd
she was handsome; a cabbage rose; a russet apple; tawny; but scarred on
the jaw--the scar lengthened when she smiledSince she was telling over
the story she must have been a guest there, and yet, dressed as she was
out of fashion as women dressed, years ago, in pictures, in sporting
newspapers, she did not seem exactly a guest, nor yet a maidHad she
had a basket with her she would have been the woman who breeds fox
terriers; the owner of the Siamese cat; some one connected with hounds
and horsesBut she had only a suit case and the pheasantsSomehow,
therefore, she must have wormed her way into the room that she was
seeing through the stuffing of the carriage, and the man's bald head,
and the picture of York MinsterAnd she must have listened to what they
were saying, for now, like somebody imitating the noise that someone
else makes, she made a little click at the back of her throat
"Chk," said Miss Antonia, omega automatic geneve pinching her glasses on her noseThe damp
leaves fell across the long windows of the gallery; one or two stuck,
fish shaped, and lay like inlaid brown wood upon the window panesThen
the trees in the Park shivered, and the leaves, flaunting down, seemed
to make the shiver visible--the damp brown shiver Miss Antonia sniffed again, and pecked at the flimsy white stuff
that she held in her hands, as a hen pecks nervously rapidly at a piece
of white breadThe room was draughtyThe doors did not fit, nor the
windowsNow and then a ripple, like a reptile, ran under the carpetOn
the carpet lay panels of green and yellow, where the sun rested, and
then the sun moved and pointed a finger as if in mockery at a hole in
the carpet and stoppedAnd then on it went, the sun's feeble but
impartial finger, and lay upon the coat of arms over the
fireplace--gently illumined--the shield, the pendant grapes, the mermaid,
and the spearsMiss Antonia looked up as the sac dolce gabana light strengthenedVast
lands, so they said, the old people had owned--her forefathers--the
RashleighsNosing round the islandThere she
was, all scales from the tail to the waistDown
struck the finger of the sun and her eye went with itNow it rested on
a silver frame; on a photograph; on an egg-shaped baldish head, on a lip
that stuck out under the moustache; and the name "Edward" written with a
flourish beneath Miss Antonia muttered, turning the film of white upon
her knee--"had the Blue Room," she added with a toss of her head as the
light faded
Out in the King's Ride the pheasants were being driven across the noses
of the gunsUp they spurted from the underwood like heavy rockets,
reddish purple rockets, and as they rose the guns cracked in order,
eagerly, sharply, as if a line of dogs had suddenly barkedTufts of
white smoke held together for a moment; then gently solved themselves,
faded, and dispersed
In the deep cut road beneath chanel j12 watches the hanger, a cart stood, laid already with
soft warm bodies, with limp claws, and still lustrous eyesThe birds
seemed alive still, but swooning under their rich damp feathersThey
looked relaxed and comfortable, stirring slightly, as if they slept upon
a warm bank of soft feathers on the floor of the cart
Then the Squire, with the hang-dog stained face, in the shabby gaiters,
cursed and raised his gun
Miss Antonia stitched onNow and then a tongue of flame reached round
the grey log that stretched from one bar to another across the grate,
ate it greedily, then died out, leaving a white bracelet where the bark
had been eaten offMiss Antonia looked up for a moment, stared wide
eyed, instinctively, as a dog stares at a flameThen the flame sank and
she stitched again
Then, silently, the enormously high door openedTwo lean men came in,
and drew a table over the hole in the carpetThey went out; they came

Lesson One: The Rich Don't Work For Money
"Dad, Can You Tell Me How to Get Rich?"
My dad put down the evening paper"Why do you want to get rich, son?"
"Because today Jimmy's mom drove up in their new Cadillac, and they were going to their beach house for the weekendHe took three of his friends, but Mike and I weren't invitedThey told us we weren't invited because we were `poor kids'
"They did?" my dad asked incredulously I replied in a hurt tone
My dad silently shook his head, 2.55 chanel jumbo pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and went back to reading the paperI stood waiting for an answerBy some twist of fate, I attended the same public school where the rich people sent their kidsWe were primarily a sugar plantation townThe managers of the plantation and the other affluent people of the town, such as doctors, business owners, and bankers, sent their children to this school, grades 1 to 6After grade 6, their children were generally sent off to private schoolsBecause my family lived on one side of the street, I went to this schoolHad I lived on the other side of the street, I would have gone to a different school, with kids from families more like mineAfter grade 6,these kids and I would go on to the public intermediate and high miu miu clutch schoolThere was no private school for them or for me
My dad finally put down the paperI could tell he was thinking
"Well, son," he began slowly"If you want to be rich, you have to learn to make money
"How do I make money?" I asked

| When she saw Lina, she
flinchedShe didn't say anything, just turned around
and kept walking
Lina caught hold of one end of the green scarf and
jerked Lizzie to a halt"Stop!"
"What for?" Lizzie said She
tried to pull away, but she didn't get far, because Lina
had a firm grip on her scarf
Lina spoke in a low voiceThere were people all
around them--a couple of old men leaning against the
wall, a group of chattering children just ahead, workers
going toward the storerooms--and she didn't want
to be overheard"You have to tell me where you got
those rolex submariner 50th anniversary cans," she saidI found them on a back shelf at the
market Lizzie tried to wrench her
scarf out of Lina's grip, but Lina held on
"You didn't," Lina said"No market would just forget
about things like that She gave
a yank on the end of the scarf
"Stop it!" Lizzie reached out and grabbed a handful
of Lina's hairLina yelped and pulled harder on the
scarf, and the two of them scuffled, snatching at each
other's hair and coatsThey knocked against a woman
who snapped at them angrily, and finally they toppled
over, sitting down hard on the pavement
Lina was the cartier tank watch first one to laughIt was so much like
what they used to do in fun, chasing each other and

she said"All right, I'll tell youI sort of wanted to anyway
Lizzie leaned forward with her elbows on her
knees and lowered her voice"Well, it's this," she said
"There's a storeroom worker named LooperDo you know him? He was two classes ahead of
us
"I know who he is," said Lina"I took a message
for him on my christian dior saddle bag first day of workTall, with a long
skinny neck"Well, I wouldn't describe him that wayI think he's handsome
"Looper explores the storeroomsHe goes into
every room that isn't lockedHe wants to know the true situation, LinaHe's not like most workers, who
just plod along doing their jobs and then go homeHe
wants to find things out
"And what has he found out?" Lina asked
"He's found out that there's still a little bit left of
some rare things, just a few things in rooms here and
there that have been forgottenYou know, Lina," she
said, "there are so many rooms down chanel cambon bag thereSome of
them, way out at the edges, are marked 'Empty* in the
ledger book, and so no one ever goes there anymore
But Looper found out that they're not all empty
150
"So he's been taking things
"Just a few things! And not often
"And he's giving some to you Lizzie smiled a little
smile and hugged her arms togetherShe feels thatvray about Looper
"But Looper's stealing," said Lina"And Lizzie--he

"Pipeworks laborer," Lina said in a choked
whisper
"Louder," said the mayor
"Pipeworks laborer," Lina said again, her voice
loud and crackedThere was a sigh of sympathy from
the classKeeping her eyes on the floor, Lina went back
to her desk and sat down
Pipeworks laborers worked below the storerooms
in the deep labyrinth of tunnels that contained
Ember's water and sewer pipesThey spent their days
stopping up leaks and replacing pipe jointsIt was wet,
cold work; it could even be dangerousA swift underground
river ran through the Pipeworks, and every
now and then someone fell into it and was lostPeople
were lost replica omega seamaster planet ocean occasionally in the tunnels, too, if they
strayed too far

Lina stared miserably down at a letter B someone
had scratched into her desktop long agoAlmost anything
would have been better than Pipeworks laborer
Greenhouse helper had been her second choice
She imagined with longing the warm air and earthy
smell of the greenhouse, where she could have worked
with Clary, the greenhouse manager, someone she'd
known all her lifeShe would have been content as a
doctor's assistant, too, binding up cuts and bones
Even street-sweeper or cart-puller would have been
betterAt least then she could have stayed above
ground, cheap prada handbags with space and people around herShe
thought going down into the Pipeworks must be like
being buried alive
One by one, the other students chose their jobs
None of them got such a wretched job as hersFinally
the last person rose from his chair and walked forwardHis dark eyebrows were drawn
together in a frown of concentrationHis hands, Lina
saw, were clenched into fists at his sides
Doon reached into the bag and took out the last
scrap of paperHe paused a minute, pressing it tightly
in his hand
"Go on," said the mayor
Unfolding the paper, Doon read: "Messenger He
scowled, crumpled the paper, and dashed it to tiffany co jewelry the
floor
12
Lina gasped; the whole class rustled in surprise
Why would anyone be angry to get the job of
messenger?
"Bad behavior!" cried the mayorHis eyes bulged
and his face darkened"Go to your seat immediately
Doon kicked the crumpled paper into a corner
Then he stalked back to his desk and flung himself
down
The mayor took a short breath and blinked furiously
"Disgraceful," he said, glaring at Doon"A childish
display of temper! Students should be glad to work
for their cityEmber will prosper if all He held up a stern finger as he said this and moved his eyes slowly from one face
to the next
Suddenly Doon dior logo spoke up"But Ember is not prospering!"
he cried"Everything is getting worse and
worse!"
"Silence!" cried the mayor
"The blackouts!" cried DoonHe jumped from his
seat"The lights go out all the time now! And the
shortages, there's shortages of everything! If no one
does anything about it, something terrible is going to
happen!"
Lina listened with a pounding heartWhat was
wrong with Doon? Why was he so upset? He was
taking things too seriously, as he always did
13
Miss Thorn strode to Doon and put a hand on his
shoulder"Sit down now," she said quietlyBut Doon
remained standingFor a few moments he silver handbags said
