| My real dad, the one I call the poor one, thought that my rich dad was violating child labor laws and should be investigated
My educated poor dad told me to demand what I deserveAt least 25 cents an hourMy poor dad told me that if I did not get a raise, I was to quit immediately
"You don't need that damned job anyway," said my poor dad with indignity
At 8 o'clock Saturday morning, I was going through the same rickety door of Mike's house
"Take a seat and wait in line," Mike's dad said as I enteredHe turned and disappeared into his little office next to a bedroom
I looked around the room and did not see Mike chanel 2.55 anywhereFeeling awkward, I cautiously sat down next to the same two women who where there four weeks earlierThey smiled and slid across the couch to make room for me
Forty-five minutes went by, and I was steamingThe two women had met with him and left thirty minutes earlierAn older gentleman was in there for twenty minutes and was also gone
The house was empty, and I sat out in his musty dark living room on a beautiful sunny Hawaiian day, waiting to talk to a cheapskate who exploited childrenI could hear him rustling around the office, talking on the phone, and ignoring meI was now ready to walk out, but for some reason quilted chanel bag I stayed
Finally, fifteen minutes later, at exactly 9 o'clock, rich dad walked out of his office, said nothing, and signaled with his hand for me to enter his dingy office
"I understand you want a raise or you're going to quit," rich dad said as he swiveled in his office chair
"Well, you're not keeping your end of the bargain," I blurted out nearly in tearsIt was really frightening for a 9-year-old boy to confront a grownup
"You said that you would teach me if I worked for youWell, I've worked for youI've given up my baseball games to work for youAnd you don't keep your wordYou haven't taught me anythingYou are a black chanel quilted crook like everyone in town thinks you areYou want all the money and don't take care of your employeesYou make me wait and don't show me any respectI'm only a little boy, and I deserve to be treated better
Rich dad rocked back in his swivel chair, hands up to his chin, somewhat staring at meIt was like he was studying me"In less than a month, you sound like most of my employeesNot understanding what he was saying, I continued with my grievance"I thought you were going to keep your end of the bargain and teach meInstead you want to torture me? That's cruel
"I am teaching you," rich dad said quietly
"What have you chanel earrings taught me? Nothing!" I said angrily"You haven't even talked to me once since I agreed to work for peanutsHah! I should notify the government about you
We have child labor laws, you knowMy dad works for the government, you know
"Wow!" said rich dad"Now you sound just like most of the people who used to work for mePeople I've either fired or they've quit
"So what do you have to say?" I demanded, feeling pretty brave for a little kidI've worked for you, and you have not kept your wordYou haven't taught me anything
"How do you know that I've not taught you anything?" asked rich dad calmly
"Well, you've never talked replica tiffany jewelry to |

"This is where it says 'door,'" Lina said"Somehow
the door is by the ledgeDoes that make sense?"
"And there's that "small steel pan'--what can that

"But look, but look Lina tapped the paper
urgently"Here it says 'he' and here it says 'ey' It's
talking about a key!"
"But what is it a door to?" said Doon, sitting back
"Remember, we thought about this beforeA door in
the bank of the river would lead under the Pipeworks"Maybe it leads to a long
tunnel that goes way out beyond Ember, and then
gradually up and up tiffany knockoff until it comes out at the other
city
"What other city?" Doon glanced up at the drawings
tacked to the walls of Lina's room
174
Doon shruggedOr it could be
another city exactly like this one
That was a gloomy thoughtBoth of them felt
their spirits sink a little at the ideaSo they turned back
to the task of deciphering
"Next line," said Lina
But Doon sat back on his heels againHe stared
into the air, half smiling"I have an idea," he said"If
we do find the way out, we'll need to announce it to

"It would be," Lina said"But that's only two days

That night, Doon had trouble sleepingHe couldn't

"No,"
said Doon"Just can't sleep"
"Are you worrying? Frightened of anything?"
Doon wanted to say, Yes, FatherI'm worried
because the mayor of our city is taking for himself the

those feelings are whirling around in my head, which

"A child causing trouble, Mayor Cole," said the

The mayor glared at herShame! Disgracing yourself in your

"I didn't mean to cause trouble," said Lina"I was

"What is the message?" he saidHe bent down so that

The mayor smiled a tight little smileHe turned to

"And you," said the mayor, turning to the assistant

Barton Snode blinked and nodded
Lina ran for the doorOutside, the small crowd
was still standing by the stepsA few of them cheered
as Lina came outOthers chanel j12 watches frowned at her and muttered
words like "mischief" and "silliness" and "showoff
Lina felt embarrassed suddenlyShe hadn't meant to
show offShe hurried past, out into Otterwill Street,
and started to run
She didn't see Doon, who was among those watching
herHe had been on his way home from his first
day in the Pipeworks when he'd come across the
38
cluster of people gazing up at the roof of the Gathering
Hall and laughingHe was tired and chillyThe
bottoms of his pants legs were wet, and mud clung to
his shoes and smeared his handsWhen he raised his
eyes and saw the small figure next to the clock tower,
he realized right away gucci watch bands that it was LinaHe saw her raise
her arm and wave and hop about, and for a second he
wondered what it would be like to be up there, looking
out over the whole city, laughing and wavingWhen
Lina came down, he wanted to speak to herBut he
knew he was filthy-looking and that she would ask him
questions he didn't want to answer
Walking fast, he headed for home

CHAPTER 3
Under Ember
That morning, Doon had arrived at the Pipeworks full
of anticipationThis was the world of serious work at
last, where he would get a chance to do something useful
What he'd learned in school, and from his father,
and from his own chanel devil wears prada necklace investigations--he could put it all to
good purpose now
He pushed open the heavy Pipeworks door and
stepped insideThe air smelled strongly of dampness
and moldy rubber, which seemed to him a pleasant,
interesting smellHe strode up a hallway where yellow
slickers hung from pegs on the wallsAt the end of the
hallway was a room full of people, some of them
sitting on benches and pulling on knee-high rubber
boots, some struggling into their slickers, some buckling
on tool beltsA raucous clamor filled the room
Doon watched from the doorway, eager to join in but
not sure what to do
40
After a moment a man emerged from the throng
He thrust out a omega seamaster fake hand |

In the Buddhist world view, nothing happens without causeTo transcend suffering, we must stop causing further sufferingActing otherwise is no different than trying to escape one's shadow by running in the blazing sun!Editor/BWF: 310
PARABLE 022: CHARITY OF THE DESTITUTE
"During the lifetime of a certain transhistorical Buddha there was a couple so destitute that husband and wife had but one robe between themWhen the husband would leave their shack to seek work, his wife had to shut the door and stay home, nude, and vice versaHowever, upon hearing wandering monks teach that charity would extinguish the sufferings of poverty and want, husband and wife discussed the matter between themselvesThey decided to donate their only piece of cloth by passing it through the window, determined to remain in the shack, completely without clothing, resigned to deathThis resolute good action came to the attention of the local ruler, who then showered them with garments and richesFrom that time on, through each succeeding lifetime, they never again were in want for the necessities of life, and ultimately attained complete liberationThus, although it may be difficult to practice charity when we are destitute ourselves, we should understand that the cause of such poverty and want is our own past stinginessIf we are determined to endure deprivation and suffering, charity is something that can buy miu miu still be accomplished

PARABLE 023: CHIKO MANDALA
The story of this Japanese mandala, which is based on an eighth century legend, is as follows
"Thee monks Chiko and Raiko of Gango-ji shared a room in which they had practiced religious austerities from the time of their youthAt one year's end,
Raiko ceased speaking, never replying to any of Chiko's questionsSeveral years later, Raiko diedWorried about Raiko's future existence, Chiko prayed that he might learn what had happened to his friendOne night in a dream he met RaikoThe setting was an ethereal, splendid place, and when Chiko asked where they were, Raiko replied that it was the Pure LandHe went on to explain that from his earliest days he had studied the sutras and holy scriptures and had longed for birth in Paradise, knowing all the while that this was no easy feat to achieveHe had stopped talking in order to focus his inner vision exclusively on the countenance of Amida and on the magnificence of the Pure LandAs a result, he had finally attained birth in ParadiseBut, continued Raiko, Chiko was still disordered in mind and body and his good deeds were fewSince it seemed impossible for him to be born there as well, he should return home straightaway
Chiko began to lament, begging to know how it might be possible for someone like him to achieve birth in the Western Paradise, whereupon Raiko, replying that tas hermes Chiko should ask that question of the Buddha himself, guided Chiko to AmidaAmida told Chiko that it was necessary to devote one's full attention to an inner visualization of the extraordinary excellences of the Buddha (Amida) and the sublimity of the Pure Land in order to attain birth thereWhen Chiko confessed that he could not hold in his mind's eye the mysterious and limitless vision of the Western Paradise-- that this was a feat beyond the capabilities of ordinary men-- Amida held out his right hand and revealed a miniature Paradise in his palm
Immediately upon waking from the dream, Chiko went to an artist and had him paint the vision of the Pure Land as it had appeared in the dreamThe monk devoted the rest of his life to a contemplation of this mandala and finally achieved rebirth in the Western Paradise

PARABLE 024: COMPASSION (ANIMAL SANCTUARY)
From Patriarch Hsuan-tsang's Records of the Western Regions:
"The lord of Varanasi once hunted and killed many deer on this landThe deer king implored him to stop the unnecessary killing and promised that each day he himself would give the lord the number of deer which he requiredOne day, he was faced with the necessity of sending a pregnant deerRather than sacrifice her with her unborn child, the deer king went to
the lord to offer his own flesh insteadThe lord was so moved by the deer king's compassion that he stopped tiffany and co necklace the daily killing and gave it the landHence it was named the Deer Park

PARABLE 025: COMPASSION (THE HIMALAYAN PARROT)
"In a thicket at the foot of the Himalayan Mountains there once lived a parrot together with many other animals and birdsOne day a fire started in the thicket from the friction of bamboos in a strong wind and the birds and animals were in frightened confusionThe parrot, feeling compassion for their fright and suffering, and [remembering] the kindness he had received in the bamboo thicket where he could shelter himself, tried to do all he could to save themHe dipped himself in a pond nearby and flew over the fire and shook off the drops of water to extinguish the fireHe repeated this diligently with a heart of compassion [for all the animals in the thicket]This spirit of compassion and self-sacrifice was noticed by a heavenly god who came down from the sky and said to the parrot: 'You have a gallant mind, but what good do you expect to accomplish by a few drops of water against this great fire?' The parrot answered: 'There is nothing that cannot be accomplished by the spirit of compassion and self-sacrificeI will try over and over again and then over in the costume jewelry chanel next life' The great god was impressed by the parrot's spirit and they together extinguished the fire (The Teaching of the Buddha)

PARABLE 026: CULTIVATION (EASY PATH)
Pure Land School
"The ancients used to say, by way of comparison: Practicing other methods is as difficult and laborious as an ant climbing a high mountain; reciting the Buddha's name seeking rebirth in the Pure Land is as swift and easy as a boat sailing downstream in the direction of the blowing wind
Moreover, once reborn there, living in an auspicious and peaceful environment, always in the company of Buddha Amitabha and the Bodhisattvas, the practitioner will swiftly achieve success in whatever Dharma method he choosesHe is like a log rolling down a high mountain, which just keeps going and never stops, even for a moment
Master Tam: 236
PARABLE 027: CULTIVATION (METAPHYSICAL SPECULATIONS)
Arrow Smeared With Poison
"It is as if a man had been wounded by an arrow thickly smeared with poison, and his friends and kinsmen were to get a surgeon to heal him, and he were to say, I will not have this arrow pulled out until I know by what man I was wounded, whether he is of the warrior caste, or a brahmin, or of the agricultural, or the lowest casteOr if he were to say, I will not have this arrow pulled out until I know of what name or family the man is -- or whether he is tall, or short, or of middle height chloe black |

| The greatest losses of all are those from missed... |
06-06-2010 |
|
| The greatest losses of all are those from missed opportunities If all your money is tied up in your house, you may be forced to work harder because your money continues blowing out of the expense column, instead of adding to the asset column, the classic middle class cash flow patternIf a young couple would put more money into their asset column early on, their later years would get easier, especially as they prepared to send their children to collegeTheir assets would have grown and would be available to help cover expensesAll too often, a house only serves as a vehicle for incurring a home-equity loan to pay for mounting expensesIn summary, the end result in making a decision to own a house that is too expensive in lieu of starting an investment portfolio early on impacts an individual in at least the following three ways:
1Loss of time, during which other assets could have grown in valueLoss of additional capital, which could have been invested instead of paying for high-maintenance expenses related directly to the homeToo often, people count their house, savings and retirement plan as all they have in bay bag chloe their asset columnBecause they have no money to invest, they simply do not investThis costs them investment experience Most never become what the investment world calls a "sophisticated investor And the best investments are usually first sold to "sophisticated investors," who then turn around and sell them to the people playing it safeI am not saying don't buy a houseI am saying, understand the difference between an asset and a liabilityWhen I want a bigger house, I first buy assets that will generate the cash flow to pay for the house
My educated dad's personal financial statement best demonstrates the life of someone in the rat race His expenses seem to always keep up with his income, never allowing him to invest in assetsAs a result, his liabilities, such as his mortgage and credit card debts are larger than his assets The following picture is worth a thousand words:
Educated Dad's Financial Statement
Income=Expense
Asset < Liability
My rich dad's personal financial statement, on the other hand, reflects the results of a life dedicated to investing and minimizing liabilities:
Rich Dad's chanel white purse Financial Statement
Income > Expense
Asset > Liability
A review of my rich dad's financial statement is why the rich get richerThe asset column generates more than enough income to cover expenses, with the balance reinvested into the asset columnThe asset column continues to grow and, therefore, the income it produces grows with it
The result being: The rich get richer!
Why the Rich Get Richer
Income -> Assets -> More Income
Expenses are low, Liabilities are low
The middle class finds itself in a constant state of financial struggleTheir primary- income is through wages, and as their wages increase, so do their taxesTheir expenses tend to increase in equal increments as their wages increase; hence the phrase "the rat race They treat their home as their primary asset, instead on investing in income-producing assets
Why the Middle Class Struggle
Income goes up, Expenses go up
Assets do not increase, Liabilities do increase
This pattern of treating your home as an investment and the philosophy that a pay raise means you can buy a larger home or spend more is the foundation of today's debt-ridden vintage omega watches societyThis process of increased spending throws families into greater debt and into more financial uncertainty, even though they may be advancing in their jobs and receiving pay raises on a regular basisThis is high risk living caused by weak financial education
The massive loss of jobs in the 1990s-the downsizing of businesses-has brought to light how shaky the middle class really is financially Suddenly, company pension plans are being replaced by 401k plansSocial Security is obviously in trouble and cannot be looked at as a source for retirementPanic has sei in for the middle classThe good thing today is that many of these people have recognized these issues and have begun buying mutual fundsThis increase in investing is largely responsible for the huge rally we have seen in the stock marketToday, there are more and more mutual funds being created to answer the demand by the middle class
Mutual funds are popular because they represent safetyAverage mutual fund buyers are too busy working to pay taxes and mortgages, save for their children's college and pay off credit cards They do not have time to study to bag chloe paddington learn how to invest, so they rely on the expertise of the manager of a mutual fundAlso, because the mutual fund includes many different types of investments, they feel their money is safer because ii is "diversified
This group of educated middle class subscribes to the "diversify" dogma put out by mutual fund brokers and financial planners
The real tragedy is that the lack of early financial education is what creates the risk faced by average middle class peopleThe reason they have to play it safe is because their financial positions are tenuous at best Their balance sheets are not balancedThey are loaded with liabilities, with no real assets that generate incomeTypically, their only source of income is their paycheckTheir livelihood becomes entirely dependent on their employer
So when genuine "deals of a lifetime" come along, those same people cannot take advantage of the opportunityThey must play it safe, simply because they are working so hard, are taxed to the max, and are loaded with debt
As I said at the start of this section, the most important rule is to know the difference between an asset and a chloe bags paddington liabi |

|
| How could he just vanish without a
word? But it was too late now, he couldn't go backIf
only there was some way to send him a message--and
in a moment, he realized there wasHe stopped, fished
in his pack for the paper and pencil he had brought,
and scribbled on it, "Father--We have found the way
out--it was in the Pipeworks after all! You will know
about it tomorrow He folded this in
quarters, wrote "Deliver to Loris Harrow" in big letters
on the outside, and pinned it to the kioskThere! That
was the best he could doHe would have to trust that
someone would deliver it
In the distance, he heard the faint sound of
singingHe listened--it was "The Song of the River," just ending"Far below, like the blood of the earth,
From the center of nowhere rushing forth," he sang under his breathLike everyone in Ember, he knew
the words of the three songs by heartHe sang along
227
softly chanel sac with the faraway singers:
"Making the light for the lamps of Ember,
Older than anyone can remember,
Faster than anything anyone knows,
The river comes and the river goes"
Up Rim Street now to River RoadHe was halfway
thereThe singers were starting on "The Song of Darkness
It was his favorite, with its powerful, deep
harmonies--he was a little sorry to be missing itHe
went up the Pott Street side of empty Riverroad
Square, where another poster hung crookedly on the
kiosk, and he was headed toward North Street when
suddenly the lights flickered and went out
He jolted to a stopStand still and wait--that was
his automatic responseIn the distance he heard a dip
in the sound of the singing, some startled voices breaking
the flow, but then the song rose again, defying the
darknessFor a moment all thoughts vanished from
Doon's mind; there was nothing but the fearless words
of the white chanel watch ceramic song:
"Black as sleep and deep as dreaming,
Darkness like an endless night
Yet within the streets of Ember
Bright and bravely shines our light
228
He sang, standing still in the blacknessWhen the
song ended, he waitedThe lights would surely come
back soonFor a few minutes there was silence, and
then, far away but piercingly clear, he heard a scream
More screams and shouts followed, the sounds of
panicHe felt the panic himself, like a hand taking hold
of him, making him want to leap up and fling himself
against the dark
But suddenly, with a flash of joy, he remembered:
he didn't have to wait for the lights to come back on
He had what no citizen of Ember had ever had
before--a way to see in the darkHe set his pack down,
untied the knot at the top, and groped around inside
until he felt the candleDown in a corner, he found the
little packet of matchesHe scraped a match against
the black fendi spy bag pavement, and it flared up instantlyHe held the
flame to the string on the candle, and the string began
to burnHe had the only light in the
entire city
The candle didn't cast its light very far, but it was
enough to see at least the pavement in front of himHe
went slowly along Pott Street, then turned left on
North StreetAt the end of the street was the wall of
the Pipeworks office
When he got to the Pipeworks entrance, no one
was thereA little cloud of moths came to flutter
around the flame of his candle, but otherwise nothing
229
moved in Plummer SquareThere was nothing to do
but waitDoon blew the candle out--he didn't want to
use it all up in case the lights stayed off a long time-- and squatted down on the pavement, setting down his
bundle and leaning against one of the big trash cans
He waited, listening to the distant shouts--and at last
the lights blinked, blinked chanel jewellery again, and came on
Lina was nowhere in sightIf the guards had found
her and taken herBut Doon preferred not to think
about that yetHe would wait for a white--she would
have been delayed by the blackout if she was on her
wayHe couldn't see the clock tower from here, but it
was probably not quite four o'clock
What if she didn't come? The Singing was over, the
people were dispersing throughout the city, and the
guards, no doubt, would soon resume their search for
himDoon clasped his arms together and pressed
them hard against his stomach, trying to stop the
queasy fluttering
If she didn't come, Doon had two choices: he
could stay in the city and do what he could to save
Lina, or he could go in the boat by himself and hope
Lina could somehow free herself and tell the people of
Ember about the way outHe didn't like either of these
plans; he wanted to go down the river, and he wanted
to go with saddle handbags |

| They presumed that if the Princess was not a matchless beauty, she had to be the ugliest woman in the worldWhy else would he hide her anyway? Several troublemakers went into a huddle, and decided: 'Since he wouldn't let the Princess reveal herself to us, we've got to find a way to see herWe'll stop at nothing until we have our way!' So they devised a ruseAfter the banquet started, by ingratiating themselves with the Imperial Son-in-law, they coaxed him into a drinking contestOnce having succeeded in getting him dead drunk, they searched him for a string of keysWith the keys in hand, five elected representatives immediately dashed off to the palace
Earlier that morning, after her husband had left for the party, Princess Vajra became very upsetShe plaintively reproached herself 'I wonder what evil karma I created in my previous lives, for now I am imprisoned by my father and detested by my husbandHe always locks me up in the innermost chamberI can't even see the sun or the people outside' Thereupon she transformed her chanel black handbags thinking, and said to herself 'I am really blessed to be born at a time when the Buddha is in this worldI've heard that the Buddhadharma is limitless and benefits all living beingsAnyone who is suffering only needs to truly repent and humbly beseech the Buddha, and, by His grace, will surely be conferred blessings and liberation'
The Princess thus gave rise to profound remorse in her mindWith utmost sincerity, she gazed up at the distant sky as if she could see the World Honored One's golden appearance thereShe bowed down on the ground and prayed: 'I only wish that the World Honored One will bestow kindness on me, and appear before me to teach, advise, and enlighten me, thus eradicating my karmic obstacles and delivering me from these constraints'
At that moment, the Princess was profoundly sincere and completely respectfulKnowing Princess Vajra's resolve, the Buddha miraculously appeared before herThe Buddha then revealed the mark of His purplish blue hair to herWhen the Princess raised her head from bowing and saw the cheap tiffany's jewelry Tathagata's exquisite hair mark, she was awestruckDue to her deepest respect and joy, the bad characteristics of her hair disappeared all at onceIt became soft, fine, and purplish blue in color, resembling that of the Buddha's
She next observed the Buddha's face, perfect like a full moonShe then observed a bright golden light issuing forth from His body, as well as His peerless thirty-two hallmarksAt that very moment, the feeling of despondence which had been plaguing her dissolved instantlyWhereupon she was imbued with the virtues of tranquility, graciousness, kindness, and wisdomer ill-favored countenance and coarse complexion were altogether replaced by a wonderfully rare appearance, goddess-like, splendid and matchlessThe Buddha then spoke the Dharma for her, reformed her mind, swept away her afflictions and confusion, and eradicated all her karmic obstaclesHer mind became as pure and clear as limpid waterThereupon she certified to the first fruition of Arhatship (Master Hsuan Hua)
Everything is Mind-createdOnce the mind is hermes tas reformed, evil karma disappears
PARABLE 097: MIND-ONLY (KUMARAJIVA AND THE URN)
"When Kumarajiva was seven years old, his mother took him to a temple to worship the BuddhaKumarajiva picked up a large bronze incense urn and effortlessly lifted it over his headThen he thought, 'Hey, I'm just a childHow can I lift this heavy urn?' With this one thought, the urn crashed to the groundFrom this he realized the meaning of the doctrine, 'Everything is
made from the mind alone,' and he and his mother left the home-life [to join the Buddhist Order]

PARABLE 098: MIND-POWER (BLACKSMITH'S DAUGHTER)
"Young and widowed, a French physician travelled to the countryside to allay his sorrowOne day, when he was staying at a blacksmith's house, he was touched by the beauty of his host's daughterHe told her about his widowhood and, seeking her hand in marriage, obtained the consent of her parentsHowever, before the wedding could take place, he began to co-habit with herShortly thereafter, he left for the citySeeing his chanel necklace daughter pregnant and growing heavier and heavier by the day, with the culprit no more in sight than the wings of a redbird in flight, the blacksmith reflected on the fact that he was too poor and isolated to sue successfullyHe therefore tried to relieve his anger and frustration by striking his hammer against its iron stand each evening, while shouting the name of the physician, wishing to blow his head apartUnbeknownst to him, in the faraway city, each evening at five o'clock, the physician would grab his head and scream in painHe tried every known remedy without successSome time afterward, a friend of the doctor, on a visit to the countryside, happened to pass the blacksmith's shop one evening and overheard the striking hammer and the swearingHe went in to inquire and having understood the whole story, deduced the cause of his friend's predicamentUpon returning to the city, he urged the physician to make amends by marrying the blacksmith's daughterAs might be expected, after the wedding, the physician's strange symptoms black fendi spy disappe |

Yes, Fanny Wilmot smiled, Julia had not endangered her habitsThey
remained safe; and her habits would have suffered if she had married
"They're ogres," she had said one evening, half laughing, when another
pupil, a girl lately married, suddenly bethinking her that she would
miss her husband, had rushed off in haste
"They're ogres," she had said, laughing grimlyAn ogre would have
interfered perhaps with breakfast in bed; with walks at dawn down to the
riverWhat would have happened (but one could hardly conceive this) had
she had children? She took astonishing precautions against chills,
fatigue, rich food, the wrong food, draughts, heated rooms, journeys in
the Tubefor she could never determine which of these it was exactly
that brought on those terrible headaches that gave her life the
semblance of a battlefieldShe was always engaged in outwitting the
enemy, until it seemed as if the pursuit had its interest; could she
have beaten the enemy finally she would have found life a little dull
As it was, the tug-of-war was perpetual--on the one side the nightingale
or the view which she loved with passion--yes, for views and birds she
felt nothing less than passion; on the other the damp path or the horrid
long drag up a steep hill which would certainly make her good for
nothing next day and bring on one of her headachesWhen, therefore,
from time to time, she managed her forces adroitly and white chloe bag brought off a
visit to Hampton Court the week the crocuses--those glossy bright flowers
were her favourite--were at their best, it was a victoryIt was
something that lasted; something that mattered for everShe strung the
afternoon on the necklace of memorable days, which was not too long for
her to be able to recall this one or that one; this view, that city; to
finger it, to feel it, to savour, sighing, the quality that made it
unique
"It was so beautiful last Friday," she said, "that I determined I must
go there So she had gone off to Waterloo on her great undertaking--to
visit Hampton Court--aloneNaturally, but perhaps foolishly, one pitied
her for the thing she never asked pity for (indeed she was reticent
habitually, speaking of her health only as a warrior might speak of his
foe)--one pitied her for always doing everything aloneHer brother was
deadHer sister was asthmaticShe found the climate of Edinburgh good
for herIt was too bleak for JuliaPerhaps, too, she found the
associations painful, for her brother, the famous archaeologist, had
died there; and she had loved her brotherShe lived in a little house
off the Brompton Road entirely alone
Fanny Wilmot saw the pin; she picked it upShe looked at Miss Craye
Was Miss Craye so lonely? No, Miss Craye was steadily, blissfully, if
only for that moment, a happy womanFanny had surprised her in a moment
of ecstasyShe sat there, half turned away from louis vuitton diaper bags the piano, with her
hands clasped in her lap holding the carnation upright, while behind her
was the sharp square of the window, uncurtained, purple in the evening,
intensely purple after the brilliant electric lights which burnt
unshaded in the bare music roomJulia Craye, sitting hunched and
compact holding her flower, seemed to emerge out of the London night,
seemed to fling it like a cloak behind her, it seemed, in its bareness
and intensity, the effluence of her spirit, something she had made which
surrounded her
All seemed transparent, for a moment, to the gaze of Fanny Wilmot, as if
looking through Miss Craye, she saw the very fountain of her being
spurting its pure silver dropsShe saw back and back into the past
behind herShe saw the green Roman vases stood in their case; heard the
choristers playing cricket; saw Julia quietly descend the curving steps
on to the lawn; then saw her pour out tea beneath the cedar tree; softly
enclosed the old man's hand in hers; saw her going round and about the
corridors of that ancient Cathedral dwelling place with towels in her
hand to mark them; lamenting, as she went, the pettiness of daily life;
and slowly ageing, and putting away clothes when summer came, because at
her age they were too bright to wear; and tending her father's sickness;
and cleaving her way ever more definitely as her will stiffened towards
her solitary goal; travelling old omega watches frugally; counting the cost and measuring
out of her tight shut purse the sum needed for this journey or for that
old mirror; obstinately adhering, whatever people might say, in choosing
her pleasures for herselfShe saw Julia----
Julia blazedOut of the night she burnt like a dead
white starJulia opened her armsJulia kissed her on the lips
"Slater's pins have no points," Miss Craye said, laughing queerly and
relaxing her arms, as Fanny Wilmot pinned the flower to her breast with
trembling fingers
THE LADY IN THE LOOKING-GLASS
A REFLECTION
People should not leave looking-glasses hanging in their rooms any more
than they should leave open cheque books or letters confessing some
hideous crimeOne could not help looking, that summer afternoon, in the
long glass that hung outside in the hallChance had so arranged it
From the depths of the sofa in the drawing-room one could see reflected
in the Italian glass not only the marble-topped table opposite, but a
stretch of the garden beyondOne could see a long grass path leading
between banks of tall flowers until, slicing off an angle, the gold rim
cut it off
The house was empty, and one felt, since one was the only person in the
drawing-room, like one of those naturalists who, covered with grass and
leaves, lie watching the shyest animals--badgers, otters,
kingfishers--moving about freely, themselves unseenThe room that
afternoon was full replica omega seamaster planet ocean of such shy creatures, lights and shadows, curtains
blowing, petals falling--things that never happen, so it seems, if
someone is lookingThe quiet old country room with its rugs and stone
chimney pieces, its sunken book-cases and red and gold lacquer cabinets,
was full of such nocturnal creaturesThey came pirouetting across the
floor, stepping delicately with high-lifted feet and spread tails and
pecking allusive beaks as if they had been cranes or flocks of elegant
flamingoes whose pink was faded, or peacocks whose trains were veiled
with silverAnd there were obscure flushes and darkenings too, as if a
cuttlefish had suddenly suffused the air with purple; and the room had
its passions and rages and envies and sorrows coming over it and
clouding it, like a human beingNothing stayed the same for two seconds
together
But, outside, the looking-glass reflected the hall table, the
sunflowers, the garden path so accurately and so fixedly that they
seemed held there in their reality unescapablyIt was a strange
contrast--all changing here, all stillness thereOne could not help
looking from one to the otherMeanwhile, since all the doors and
windows were open in the heat, there was a perpetual sighing and ceasing
sound, the voice of the transient and the perishing, it seemed, coming
and going like human breath, while in the looking-glass things had
ceased to breathe and lay still in the trance of tiffany co jewelry immorta |
