When downsizing became the "in" thing lo do, millions of workers | found out their largest so-called asset, their home, was eating them alive, j Their asset, called a house, still cost them money every monthTheir car, another "asset," was eating them aliveThe golf clubs in the garage that cost $1,000 were not worth 51,000 anymore Without job security, they had nothing to fall back on What they thought were assets could not help them survive in a time of financial crisis
1 assume most of us have filled out a credit application for a banker to buy a house or to buy a car It is always interesting to look at the "net worth'1 section It is interesting because of what accepted banking and accounting practices allow a person to count as assets
One day, to get a loan, my financial position did not look too goodSo I added my new golf clubs, my art collection, old omega books, stereo, television, Armani suits, wristwatches, shoes and other personal effects to boost the number in the asset column
But I was turned down for the loan because I had too much investment real estateThe loan committee did not like that 1 made so much money off of apartment housesThey wanted to know why I did not have a normal job, with a salaryThey did not question the Armani suits, golf clubs or art collection Life is sometimes tough when you do not fit the "standard" profile
I cringe every time I hear someone say to me that their net worth is a million dollars or $100,000 dollars or whatever One of the main reasons net worth is not accurate is simply because the moment you begin selling your assets, you are taxed for any gains
So many people have put themselves in deep financial trouble when they run short of incomeTo raise cash, they sell their omega automatic seamaster watch assetsFirst, their personal assets can generally be sold for only a fraction of the value that is listed in their personal balance sheetOr if there is a gain on the sale of the assets, they are taxed on the gainSo again, the government takes its share of the gain, thus reducing the amount available to help them out
Of debtThat is why I say someone's net worth is often "worth less" than they think
Start minding your own businessKeep your daytime job, but start buying real assets, not liabilities or personal effects that have no real value once you get them homeA new car loses nearly 25 percent of the price you pay for it the moment you drive it off the lotIt is not a true asset even if your banker lets you list it as one My $400 new titanium driver was worth S150 the moment I teed off
For adults, keep your expenses low, reduce your liabilities and diligently build a louis vuitton mahina base of solid assetsFor young people who have not yet left home, it is important for parents to teach them the difference between an asset and a liability Get them to start building a solid asset column before they leave home, get married, buy a house, have kids and get stuck in a risky financial position, clinging to a job and buying everything on credit I see so many young couples who get married and trap themselves into a lifestyle that will not let them get out of debt for most of their working years
For most people, just as the last child leaves home, the parents realize they have not adequately prepared for retirement and they begin to scramble to put some money awayThen, their own parents become ill and they find themselves with new responsibilities
So what kind of assets am I suggesting that you or your children acquire? In my world, real assets fall into chanel jumbo flap bag several different categories:
1Businesses that do not require my presenceI own them, but they are managed or run by other people If I have to work there, it's not a businessIncome-generating real estateRoyalties from intellectual property such as music, scripts, patentsAnd anything else that has value, produces income or appreciates and has a ready market
As a young boy, my educated dad encouraged me to find a safe jobMy rich dad, on the other hand, encouraged me to begin acquiring assets that I loved "If you don't love it, you won't take care of it I collect real estate simply because I love buildings and land I love shopping for them 1 could look at them all day longWhen problems arise, the problems are not so bad that it changes my love for real estate For people who hate real estate, they shouldn't buy it
I love stocks of small companies, especially ladies omega watches startu |

| His eyes were glowing, the
reflection of a tiny flame dancing in each one"That's
it for sure," he said"We've made it" Then his eyes
shifted"What's Poppy got?" he asked
Lina whipped aroundIn Poppy's hands was
something dark and rectangularIt
was more like a packet of some kindShe was plucking
and pulling at itShe lifted it to her mouth as if to tear
it with her teeth--and Lina jumped to her feetPoppy, startled, dropped the packet and
began to cry
"It's all right, never mind" Lina said, retrieving
what Poppy had been about to chew on"Come
and have some white chanel watch dinner nowHush, we're going to have
dinnerI'm sure you're hungry
In the light of Doon's candle, with Poppy squirming
on Lina's lap, they examined Poppy's findThe
packet was wrapped in slippery, greenish material and
245
bound up with a strapIt wasn't wrapped very well;
it looked as if someone had bundled it up quicklyThe
material was loose, and blotched with whitish mold
Lina edged the strap off carefullyIt was partly
rotten; on the end of it was a small square buckle,
covered with rustShe folded back the wrapping
Doon took a sharp breath"It's a fendi b book," he said
He moved his candle closer, and Lina opened the
brown coverThe pages inside had faint blue lines
across them, and someone had written along these
lines in slanted black letters, which were not neat like
the writing in the library books, but sprawling, as if the
writer had been in a hurry
Doon ran his finger under the first line"It says, They tell usweThey tell us we
leave tonight
He looked up and met Lina's eyes
"Leave?" said Lina"From where?"
"From Ember?" Doon asked"Could someone
have come this way before us?"
"Or was it someone chanel classic bag leaving the other city?"
Doon looked down at the book againHe riffled
through the pages--there were many of them
"Let's save it," said Lina"We'll read it when we get
to the new city"It'll be easier to see there
So Lina wrapped up the book again and tied it
securely into Doon's bundleThey sat on the rock shelf
246
^$br a while, eating the food Doon had broughtThe
candles wedged in the boat still shone steadily, and
their light was cozy, like lamplightIt made golden
shapes on the still surface of the pond
Doon said, "I saw the guards run after second hand chanel youTell me
what happened
"And what about Poppy? What did you tell Mrs
Murdo?"
"I told her the truth--at least I hope it's the truth
I caught up with her on her way home after the
SingingShe'd seen the posters--she was terrified-- but before she could ask questions, I just said she must
give Poppy to meI said I was taking her to safety
Because that's what I suddenly realized on the roof of
the Gathering Hall, DoonI'd been thinking before
that I had to leave Poppy because she'd be safe with
MrsBut when the lights went out, I suddenly
knew: There is no safety in gucci boston bag Emb |

| Unfortunately it got chewed up by my sister, so it is not all there
But you can still read some parts of it, such as:
marked with E

small steel pan
I will show you this document if you want to see it
Sincerely yours,
Lina Mayfleet, Messenger
34 Quillium Square
She folded the note in half and wrote "Mayor
Cole" on the frontOn her way to work the next
morning, she took it to the Gathering HallNo one was
sitting at the guard's desk, so Lina left the note there,
placed so that the guard would see it when he arrived
Then, feeling that she had done her duty, she went off
to her station
Several white chanel watch days went byThe messages Lina carried were
full of worry and fear"Do you have any extra Baby
Drink? I can't find it at the store "Have you heard
what they're saying about the generator?" "We can't
come tonight--Grandpa Bwon't get out of bed
Every day when she got home from work, Lina
asked Granny, "Did a message come for me?" But there
was nothingMaybe the mayor hadn't gotten her note
Maybe he'd gotten it and paid no attentionAfter a
week, Lina decided she was tired of waitingIf the
mayor wasn't interested in what she'd found, too bad
for himShe would figure it out
herself
Twice during the week, when Poppy and gucci men bag Granny
were both asleep, she'd had a little free timeShe'd
spent this time making a copy of the document, in case
anything happened to the fragile originalIt had taken
her a long timeShe used one of her few remaining
pieces of paper--an old label, slightly torn, from a can
of peasThe copy was as accurate as she could make it,
with the missing bits between the letters carefully indicated
as dashesShe had tucked it under the mattress
of her bed for safekeeping
Now she finally had a whole free eveningPoppy
and Granny were both asleep, and the apartment was
tidyLina sat down at her table and uncovered louis vuitton mahina the
patched-together documentShe tied back her hair so
it wouldn't keep falling in her face, and she put a piece
of paper next to her--blank except for a little bit of
Poppy's scribbling--to write down what she decoded
She started with the titleThe first word she'd
already figured outIt had to be "Instructions The
109
next word could be "for Then came "Egres"--she
wasn't sure about thatMaybe it was someone's name"Instructions for Egreston She
decided to call it "The Instructions" for short
She went on to the first line"This offic doc"
probably meant "This official document Maybe
"secur" meant "secure Then there were
the chanel quilted bags words "period" and "ears" and "city But after that,
so much was missing
She studied the line next to the number 1That could be Expect or Expert or so many thingsThat might be part of a word like
"drive" or "strive What could ip and ork possibly be?
They were so close together, maybe they were part of
one wordWhat ended with -ip? Whip, Lina thoughtWhat ended with -ork? Fork came to mind
immediatelyNothing she could
think of made sense
Maybe it wasn't forkWhat else ended in ork? Starling at the beginning of the alphabet, Lina went
through all the words that rhymed with forkMost of
them were nonsense: bork, dork, gork, hork, chanel cambon tote |

PARABLE 0116: (THE PERFECTION OF) PRECEPTS / VIMALAKIRTI
"Once when the Buddha Shakyamuni was in the world, there were two Bhikshus cultivating in the mountainsOne day, one of the Bhikshus went
down the mountain to get food and left the other one sleepingIn India at that time, the Bhikshus simply wore their sashes wrapped around them; they did not wear clothing underneathThis Bhikshu had shed his robe and was sleeping nudet that time a woman happened along, and seeing the Bhikshu, she was aroused and took advantage of himJust as she was running away from the scene, the other Bhikshu returned from town and saw her in flightUpon investigation he found out that the woman had taken advantage of the sleeping Bhikshu, and he decided to pursue her, catch her, and take her before the Buddha in protestHe took out after her, and the woman became so reckless that she slipped off the road and tumbled down the mountain to her death
So one Bhikshu had violated the precept against sexual activity and the other had broken the precept against killingAlthough the [second] c c purse Bhikshu hadn't actually pushed her down the mountain, she wouldn't have fallen if he hadn't been pursuing her' concluded the two BhikshusMessy as it was, they had to go before the Buddha and describe their offensesThe Buddha referred them to the Venerable UpaliBut when Venerable Upali heard the details, his verdict was that, indeed, one had violated the precept against sexual activity and the other against killing, offenses which cannot be absolved'You're both going to have to endure the hells in the future,' he concludedHearing this, the two monks wept, and they went about everywhere trying to find someone who could help them
Eventually, they found the Great Upasaka Vimalakirti, who asked why they were cryingWhen they had related their tale, he pronounced his judgment that they had not violated the precepts'If you can be repentant,' he said, 'then I can certify that you didn't break the precepts'
'How can that be?' they asked
'The nature of offenses is basically empty,' replied the Upasaka'You did not violate the precepts intentionally, and so it doesn't count' gold gucci watches Hearing this explanation by the Great Teacher Vimalakirti, the two Bhikshus were enlightened on the spot and were certified as attaining the fruition
So there are many exceptions within the prohibitive preceptsBut if people always look to the exceptions, they will simply not hold the preceptsThey
will beg the questionSo the Buddha did not speak much about this aspect

PARABLE 0117: RAFT OF DHARMA
Parable of the Raft:
"0 monks, a man is on a journeyHe comes to a vast stretch of waterOn this side, the shore is dangerous, but on the other it is safe and without dangerNo boat goes to the other shore which is safe and without danger, nor is there any bridge for crossing overHe says to himself, 'This sea of water is vast, and the shore on this side is full of danger; but on the other shore it is safe and without dangerIt would be good therefore if I would gather wood, branches, and leaves to make a raft, and with the help of the raft cross over safely to the other side, exerting myself with my hands and feet' Then that man gathers wood, branches and leaves and fendi spy replica makes a raft, and with the help of that raft crosses over safely to the other sideHaving crossed over and gotten to the other side, he thinks, 'This raft was of great help to meWith its aid I have crossed safely over to this sideIt would be good if I carry this raft on my head or on my back wherever I go'What do you think, 0 monks, if he acted in this wayWould that man be acting properly with regard to the raft?' 'No, sir' 'In which way, then, would he be acting properly with regard to the raft? Having crossed and gone over to the other side, suppose that man should think, 'This raft was a great help to meWith its aid I have crossed safely over to this sideIt would be good if I beached this raft on the shore, or moored it and left it afloat, and then went on my way wherever it may be' Acting in this way would that man act properly with regard to the raft'
In the same manner, O monks, I have taught a doctrine similar to a raft -- it is for crossing over, and not for carryingYou who understand that the teaching is similar to a raft, should give up attachment to even the montre cartier good Dharma; how much more then should you give up evil things34-35
Note: "In the famous parable of the raft the Buddha makes the point that, after using the makeshift raft of Dharma to ferry himself across to the 'Other Shore' of Nirvana, the adept would certainly not put the raft on top of his head and carry it off; rather, since the raft had now served its purpose, it
should be abandoned on the beachAnd just as the raft of Dharma was to be used for crossing over, and was not to be retained, so should the adept eventually abandon even right mental objects (such as the desire for calm and insight), let alone wrong onesuch warnings are especially characteristic of Zen, but Zen [admonitions] may be seen simply as particularly strong or blunt expressions of a belief held generally throughout Buddhism
Buswell: 5-6
PARABLE 0118: HUMAN REASONING
To approach the sutras "making discriminations and nurturing attachments" is no different from the Zen allegory of a person attempting to lift a chair while seated on itIf he would only get off the chair, he could raise it fendi spy bag replica easily |

| In the misty air they shone out, they moved, so
that in the sepulchral atmosphere--the windows were blurred, the lamps
haloed with fog--they were like lights dancing, will o' the wisps that
move, people say, over the graves of unquiet sleepers in churchyardsAn
absurd idea? Mere fancy! Yet after all, since there is nothing that does
not leave some residue, and memory is a light that dances in the mind
when the reality is buried, why should not the eyes there, gleaming,
moving, be the ghost of a family, of an age, of a civilization dancing
over the grave?
The train slowed downUp they stood
again as the train slid into the stationAnd the
eyes in the corner? They were shutPerhaps the light was too strong
And of course in the full blaze of the station lamps it was plain--she
was quite an ordinary, rather elderly, woman, travelling to London on
some ordinary piece of business--something connected with a cat, or a
horse, or a dogShe reached for her suit case, rose, and took the
pheasants from the rackBut did she, all the same, as she opened the
carriage door and stepped out, murmur "Chk as she passed?
THE DUCHESS AND THE JEWELLER
Oliver Bacon lived at the top of a house overlooking the Green ParkHe
had a flat; chairs jutted out at the right angles--chairs covered in
hideSofas filled 2.55 chanel jumbo the bays of the windows--sofas covered in tapestry
The windows, the three long windows, had the proper allowance of
discreet net and figured satinThe mahogany sideboard bulged discreetly
with the right brandies, whiskeys and liqueursAnd from the middle
window he looked down upon the glossy roofs of fashionable cars packed
in the narrow straits of PiccadillyA more Central position could not
be imaginedAnd at eight in the morning he would have his breakfast
brought in on a tray by a man-servant: the man-servant would unfold his
crimson dressing-gown; he would rip his letters open with his long
pointed nails and would extract thick white cards of invitation upon
which the engraving stood up roughly from duchesses, countesses,
viscountesses and Honourable LadiesThen he would wash; then he would
eat his toast; then he would read his paper by the bright burning fire
of electric coals
"Behold Oliver," he would say, addressing himself"You who began life
in a filthy little alley, you who and he would look down at his
legs, so shapely in their perfect trousers; at his boots; at his spats
They were all shapely, shining; cut from the best cloth by the best
scissors in Savile RowBut he dismantled himself often and became again
a little boy in a dark alleyHe had once thought that the height of relojes omega his
ambition--selling stolen dogs to fashionable women in WhitechapelAnd
once he had been done"Oh, Oliver," his mother had wailed"Oh, Oliver!
When will you have sense, my son?" Then he had gone behind a
counter; had sold cheap watches; then he had taken a wallet to
AmsterdamAt that memory he would churckle--the old Oliver
remembering the youngYes, he had done well with the three diamonds;
also there was the commission on the emeraldAfter that he went into
the private room behind the shop in Hatton Garden; the room with the
scales, the safe, the thick magnifying glassesWhen he passed through the knots of jewellers in
the hot evening who were discussing prices, gold mines, diamonds, reports
from South Africa, one of them would lay a finger to the side of his
nose and murmur, "Hum--m--m," as he passedIt was no more than a
murmur; no more than a nudge on the shoulder, a finger on the nose, a
buzz that ran through the cluster of jewellers in Hatton Garden on a hot
afternoon--oh, many years ago now! But still Oliver felt it purring down
his spine, the nudge, the murmur that meant, "Look at him--young Oliver,
the young jeweller--there he goesAnd he dressed
better and better; and had, first a hansom cab; then a car; and first he
went up to the dress circle, then down into the stallsAnd he had a
villa at Richmond, chanel cambon bag overlooking the river, with trellises of red roses;
and Mademoiselle used to pick one every morning and stick it in his
buttonhole
"So," said Oliver Bacon, rising and stretching his legs
And he stood beneath the picture of an old lady on the mantelpiece and
raised his hands"I have kept my word," he said, laying his hands
together, palm to palm, as if he were doing homage to her That was so; he was the richest jeweller in England; but his
nose, which was long and flexible, like an elephant's trunk, seemed to
say by its curious quiver at the nostrils (but it seemed as if the whole
nose quivered, not only the nostrils) that he was not satisfied yet;
still smelt something under the ground a little further offImagine a
giant hog in a pasture rich with truffles; after unearthing this truffle
and that, still it smells a bigger, a blacker truffle under the ground
further offSo Oliver snuffed always in the rich earth of Mayfair another
truffle, a blacker, a bigger further off
Now then he straightened the pearl in his tie, cased himself in his
smart blue overcoat; took his yellow gloves and his cane; and swayed as
he descended the stairs and half snuffed, half sighed through his long
sharp nose as he passed out into PiccadillyFor was he not still a sad
man, a dissatisfied man, a man who seeks something roxanne mulberry bag that is hidden,
though he had won his bet?
He swayed slightly as he walked, as the camel at the zoo sways from side
to side when it walks along the asphalt paths laden with grocers and
their wives eating from paper bags and throwing little bits of silver
paper crumpled up on to the pathThe camel despises the grocers; the
camel is dissatisfied with its lot; the camel sees the blue lake and the
fringe of palm trees in front of itSo the great jeweller, the greatest
jeweller in the whole world, swung down Piccadilly, perfectly dressed,
with his gloves, with his cane; but dissatisfied still, till he reached
the dark little shop, that was famous in France, in Germany, in Austria,
in Italy, and all over America--the dark little shop in the street off
Bond Street
As usual, he strode through the shop without speaking, though the four
men, the two old men, Marshall and Spencer, and the two young men,
Hammond and Wicks, stood straight and looked at him, envying himIt was
only with one finger of the amber-coloured glove, waggling, that he
acknowledged their presenceAnd he went in and shut the door of his
private room behind him
Then he unlocked the grating that barred the windowThe cries of Bond
Street came in; the purr of the distant trafficThe light from
reflectors at the back of the shop struck tiffany toggle necklace upwa |

| ' Just remember the Alamo Most of us know the story of "Chicken Little," who ran around warning the barnyard of impending doomWe all know people who are that wayBut we all have a "Chicken Little" inside each of us
And as I stated earlier, the cynic is really a little chickenWe all get a little chicken when fear and doubt cloud our thoughts
All of us have doubts "I'm not good enough "So '$ and so is better than me Or our doubts often paralyze us "What if the economy crashes right after I invest?" Or "What if I lose control and I can't pay the money back?" "What if things don't go as I planned?" Or we have friends or loved ones who will remind us of our shortcomings regardless of whether we chanel earrings logo askThey often say, "What makes you think you can do that?" Or "If it's such a good idea, how come someone else hasn't done it?" Or "That will never workYou don't know what you're talking about These words of doubt often get so loud that we fail to actA horrible feeling builds in our stomachSometimes we can't sleepWe fail to move forward So we stay with what is safe and opportunities pass us byWe watch life passing by as we sit immobilized with a cold knot in our bodyWe have all felt this at one time in our lives, some more than others
Peter Lynch of Fidelity Magellan mutual fund fame refers to warnings about the sky falling as "noise," and we all hear it
"Noise" is either created inside our heads or chloe black comes from outsideOften from friends, family, co-workers and the media Lynch recalls the time during the 1950s when the threat of nuclear war was so prevalent in the news that people began building fallout shelters and storing food and waterIf they had invested that money wisely in the market, instead of building a fallout shelter, they'd probably be financially independent today
When the riots broke out in Los Angeles a few years ago, gun sales went up all over the countryA person dies from rare hamburger meat in Washington State and the Arizona Health Department orders restaurants to have all beef cooked well-doneA drug company runs a national TV commercial showing people catching the fluThe gucci men watches ad runs in FebruaryColds go up as well as sales of their cold medicine
Most people are poor because when it comes to investing, the world is filled with Chicken Littles running around yelling, "The sky is falling And Chicken Littles are effective because everyone of us is a little chickenIt often takes great courage to not let rumors and talk of doom and gloom affect your doubts and fears
In 1992, a friend named Richard came from Boston to visit my wife and me in PhoenixHe was impressed with what we had done through stocks and real estateThe prices of real estate in Phoenix were depressedWe spent two days with him showing him what we thought were excellent opportunities for cash flow and capital chanel quilted bags appreciation

Two weeks later, the agent called to say that our friend had backed outI called immediately to find out whyAll he said was that he talked to his neighbor, and his neighbor told him it was a bad dealHe was paying too much

| "Why do you want to get rich, son?"
"Because today Jimmy's mom drove up in their new Cadillac, and they were going to their beach house for the weekendHe took three of his friends, but Mike and I weren't invitedThey told us we weren't invited because we were `poor kids'
"They did?" my dad asked incredulously I replied in a hurt tone
My dad silently shook his head, pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and went back to reading the paperI stood waiting for an answerBy some twist of fate, I attended the same public school where the rich people sent their kidsWe were primarily a sugar plantation townThe managers of the plantation and the other affluent people of the town, such as doctors, 18k omega watch business owners, and bankers, sent their children to this school, grades 1 to 6After grade 6, their children were generally sent off to private schoolsBecause my family lived on one side of the street, I went to this schoolHad I lived on the other side of the street, I would have gone to a different school, with kids from families more like mineAfter grade 6,these kids and I would go on to the public intermediate and high schoolThere was no private school for them or for me
My dad finally put down the paperI could tell he was thinking
"Well, son," he began slowly"If you want to be rich, you have to learn to make money
"How do I make money?" I asked
"Well, use your head, son," he said, tas hermes smilingWhich really meant, "That's all I'm going to tell you," or "I don't know the answer, so don't embarrass me
A Partnership Is Formed
The next morning, I told my best friend, Mike, what my dad had saidAs best I could tell, Mike and I were the only poor kids in this schoolMike was like me in that he was in this school by a twist of fateSomeone had drawn a jog in the line for the school district, and we wound up in school with the rich kidsWe weren't really poor, but we felt as if we were because all the other boys had new baseball gloves, ,,,y
new bicycles, new everything
Mom and dad provided us with the basics, like food, shelter, clothes:, But that was about itMy dad used to say, "If you want louis vuitton kabelky something, work for it We wanted things, but there was not much work available for 9- , year-old boys
"So what do we do to make money?" Mike asked
"I don't know," I said"But do you want to be my partner?"
He agreed and so on that Saturday morning, Mike became my first business partnerWe spent all morning coming up with ideas on how to 1'make moneyOccasionally we talked about all the "cool guys" at Jimmy's beach house having funIt hurt a little, but that hurt was good, for it inspired us to keep thinking of a way to make moneyFinally, that afternoon, a bolt of lightning came through our headsIt was an idea Mike had gotten from a science book he had readExcitedly, we shook hands, and the china mulberry partnership now had a business
For the next several weeks, Mike and I ran around our neighborhood, knocking on doors and asking our neighbors if they would save their toothpaste tubes for usWith puzzled looks, most adults consented with a smileSome asked us what we were doingTo which we replied, "We can't tell youIt's a business secret
My mom grew distressed as the weeks wore onWe had selected a
site next to her washing machine as the place we would stockpile our raw materialsIn a brown cardboard box that one time held catsup bottles, our little pile of used toothpaste tubes began to grow
Finally my mom put her foot downThe sight of her neighbors' , messy, crumpled used toothpaste tubes had gotten to chanel pearls |

| Two years ago, when the
coughing sickness was raging through the city again,
her father had diedSome months later, her mother,
giving birth to Poppy, had died, tooLina missed her
parents with an ache that was as strong as what she felt
for Poppy, only it was a hollow feeling instead of a full
one
"When do you start?" asked Granny
"Tomorrow," said Lina"I report to the messengers'
station at eight o'clock
"You'll be a famous messenger," said Granny
Taking Poppy with her, Lina went out of the shop
and climbed the stairs to their apartmentIt was a
small apartment, only four rooms, but there was
enough stuff in it to fill twentyThere were things
that had belonged to Lina's parents, her grandparents, and even their grandparents--old, broken, cracked,
threadbare things that had been patched and repaired
dozens or hundreds of timesPeople in Ember chanel white ceramic watch rarely
23
threw anything awayThey made the best possible use
of what they had
In Lina's apartment, layers of worn rugs and carpets
covered the floor, making it soft but uneven
underfootAgainst one wall squatted a sagging couch
with round wooden balls for legs, and on the couch
were blankets and pillows, so many that you had to
toss some on the floor before you could sit down
Against the opposite wall stood two wobbly tables that
held a clutter of plates and bottles, cups and bowls,
unmatching forks and spoons, little piles of scrap
paper, bits of string wound up in untidy wads, and a
few stubby pencilsThere were four lamps, two tall
ones that stood on the floor and two short ones that
stood on tablesAnd in uneven lines up near the ceiling
were hooks that held coats and shawls and nightgowns
and sweaters, shelves that held pots and pans,
jars with bay bag chloe unreadable labels, and boxes of buttons and
pins and tacks
Where there were no shelves, the walls had been
decorated with things of beauty--a label from a can of
peaches, a few dried yellow squash flowers, a strip of
faded but still pretty purple clothThere were drawings,
tooLina had done the drawings out of her imagination
They showed a city that looked somewhat like
Ember, except that its buildings were lighter and taller
and had more windows
One of the drawings had fallen to the floorLina
24
retrieved it and pinned it back upShe stood for a
minute and looked at the picturesOver and over, she'd
drawn the same citySometimes she drew it as seen
from afar, sometimes she chose one of its buildings
and drew it in detailShe put in stairways and street
lamps and cartsSometimes she tried to draw the people
who lived in the city, though she wasn't see by chloe bags good at
drawing people--their heads always came out too
small, and their hands looked like spidersOne picture
showed a scene in which the people of the city greeted
her when she arrived--the first person they had ever
seen to come from elsewhereThey argued with each
other about who should be the first to invite her home
Lina could see this city so clearly in her mind she
almost believed it was realShe knew it couldn't be,
thoughThe Book of the City of Ember, which all children
studied in school, taught otherwise"The city of
Ember was made for us long ago by the Builders," the
book said"It is the only light in the dark world
Beyond Ember, the darkness goes on forever in all
directions
Lina had been to the outer border of EmberShe
had stood at the edge of the trash heaps and gazed into
the darkness beyond the city--the Unknown Regions
No one had ever omega speedmaster replica gone far into the Unknown
Regions--or at least no one had gone far and returned
And no one had ever arrived in Ember from the
Unknown Regions, eitherAs far as anyone knew, the
25
darkness did go on foreverStill, Lina wanted the other
city to existIn her imagination, it was so beautiful,
and it seemed so realSometimes she longed to go
there and take everyone in Ember with her
But she wasn't thinking about the other city now
Today she was happy to be right where she wasShe set
Poppy on the couch"Wait there," she saidShe went
into the kitchen, where there was an electric stove and
a refrigerator that no longer worked and was used to
store glasses and dishes so Poppy couldn't get at them
Above the refrigerator were shelves holding more pots
and jars, more spoons and knives, a wind-up clock that
Granny always forgot to wind, and a long row of omega constellation price cans |

| It was a nice sort of image,
Ruth Anning thought--rather nice, yet she did not feel sure that she
liked this distinguished, melancholy man with his gestures; and it's
odd, she thought, how one's feelings are influencedShe did not like
HIM, though she rather liked that comparison of his of a woman to a
cherry treeFibres of her were floated capriciously this way and that,
like the tentacles of a sea anemone, now thrilled, now snubbed, and her
brain, miles away, cool and distant, up in the air, received messages
which it would sum up in time so that, when people talked about Roderick
Serle (and he was a bit of a figure) she would say unhesitatingly: "I
like him," or "I don't like him," and her opinion would be made up for
everAn odd thought; a solemn thought; throwing a green light on what
human fellowship consisted of
"It's odd that you should know Canterbury," said Mr"It's always
a shock," he went on (the white-haired lady having passed), "when one
meets someone" (they had never met before), "by chance, as it were, who
touches the fringe of what has meant a great deal to oneself, touches
accidentally, for I suppose Canterbury was nothing but a nice old town
to youSo you stayed there one summer with an aunt?" (That was all Ruth
Anning was going to tell him about her visit to Canterbury "And you
saw the sights and went away and never thought of it again
Let him think so; not liking him, she wanted him to run away with an
absurd replica santos cartier idea of herFor really, her three months in Canterbury had been
amazingShe remembered to the last detail, though it was merely a
chance visit, going to see Miss Charlotte Serle, an acquaintance of her
aunt'sEven now she could repeat Miss Serle's very words about the
thunder"Whenever I wake, or hear thunder in the night, I think
'Someone has been killed' And she could see the hard, hairy,
diamond-patterned carpet, and the twinkling, suffused, brown eyes of the
elderly lady, holding the teacup out unfilled, while she said that about
the thunderAnd always she saw Canterbury, all thundercloud and livid
apple blossom, and the long grey backs of the buildings
The thunder roused her from her plethoric middle-aged swoon of
indifference; "On, Stanley, on," she said to herself; that is, this man
shall not glide away from me, like everybody else, on this false
assumption; I will tell him the truth
"I loved Canterbury," she said
He kindled instantlyIt was his gift, his fault, his destiny
"Loved it," he repeated"I can see that you did
Her tentacles sent back the message that Roderick Serle was nice
Their eyes met; collided rather, for each felt that behind the eyes the
secluded being, who sits in darkness while his shallow agile companion
does all the tumbling and beckoning, and keeps the show going, suddenly
stood erect; flung off his cloak; confronted the otherIt was alarming;
it was terrificThey were elderly and burnished into a chloe black chloe black glowing
smoothness, so that Roderick Serle would go, perhaps to a dozen parties
in a season, and feel nothing out of the common, or only sentimental
regrets, and the desire for pretty images--like this of the flowering
cherry tree--and all the time there stagnated in him unstirred a sort of
superiority to his company, a sense of untapped resources, which sent
him back home dissatisfied with life, with himself, yawning, empty,
capriciousBut now, quite suddenly, like a white bolt in a mist (but
this image forged itself with the inevitability of lightning and loomed
up), there it had happened; the old ecstasy of life; its invincible
assault; for it was unpleasant, at the same time that it rejoiced and
rejuvenated and filled the veins and nerves with threads of ice and
fire; it was terrifying"Canterbury twenty years ago," said Miss
Anning, as one lays a shade over an intense light, or covers some
burning peach with a green leaf, for it is too strong, too ripe, too
full
Sometimes she wished she had marriedSometimes the cool peace of middle
life, with its automatic devices for shielding mind and body from
bruises, seemed to her, compared with the thunder and the livid
apple-blossom of Canterbury, baseShe could imagine something different,
more like lightning, more intenseShe could imagine some physical
sensationShe could imagine----
And, strangely enough, for she had never seen him before, her senses,
those tentacles which were thrilled and chanel watch j12 white snubbed, now sent no more
messages, now lay quiescent, as if she and MrSerle knew each other so
perfectly, were, in fact, so closely united that they had only to float
side by side down this stream
Of all things, nothing is so strange as human intercourse, she thought,
because of its changes, its extraordinary irrationality, her dislike
being now nothing short of the most intense and rapturous love, but
directly the word "love" occurred to her, she rejected it, thinking
again how obscure the mind was, with its very few words for all these
astonishing perceptions, these alternations of pain and pleasureFor
how did one name thisThat is what she felt now, the withdrawal of
human affection, Serle's disappearance, and the instant need they were
both under to cover up what was so desolating and degrading to human
nature that everyone tried to bury it decently from sight--this
withdrawal, this violation of trust, and, seeking some decent
acknowledged and accepted burial form, she said:
"Of course, whatever they may do, they can't spoil Canterbury
He smiled; he accepted it; he crossed his knees the other way aboutShe
did her part; he hisSo things came to an endAnd over them both came
instantly that paralysing blankness of feeling, when nothing bursts from
the mind, when its walls appear like slate; when vacancy almost hurts,
and the eyes petrified and fixed see the same spot--a pattern, a coal
scuttle--with an exactness which is fendi spy bag replica terrifying, since no emotion, no
idea, no impression of any kind comes to change it, to modify it, to
embellish it, since the fountains of feeling seem sealed and as the mind
turns rigid, so does the body; stark, statuesque, so that neither Mr
Serle nor Miss Anning could move or speak, and they felt as if an
enchanter had freed them, and spring flushed every vein with streams of
life, when Mira Cartwright, tapping MrSerle archly on the shoulder,
said:
"I saw you at the Meistersinger, and you cut meVillain," said Miss
Cartwright, "you don't deserve that I should ever speak to you again
And they could separate
A SUMMING UP
Since it had grown hot and crowded indoors, since there could be no
danger on a night like this of damp, since the Chinese lanterns seemed
hung red and green fruit in the depths of an enchanted forest, Mr
Bertram Pritchard led MrsLatham into the garden
The open air and the sense of being out of doors bewildered Sasha
Latham, the tall, handsome, rather indolent looking lady, whose majesty
of presence was so great that people never credited her with feeling
perfectly inadequate and gauche when she had to say something at a
partyBut so it was; and she was glad that she was with Bertram, who
could be trusted, even out of doors, to talk without stoppingWritten
down what he said would be incredible--not only was each thing he said in
itself insignificant, but there was no connection between the gucci women's watches different
